Decided to finally purchase a brass punch set for my gunsmithing needs (been using steel).

The "gunsmith" sets seem to be marked up for what you get. Anyone had good luck with no name sets off amazon?

Open to an advise.

I had gotten a set from a local place quite a while ago, they are an industrial brand (Grip/MIT/ete.., china anyway) and they are ok, nothing special. I dont know if the grade of brass used is different on the cheap ones or not.

I did pick up a 1/4 Matco brass punch recently (smallest they offer, Mayhew OEM) and other then being somewhat short, it did well for what I needed. It's supposed to have a lifetime warranty.

Midway has a Grace set for 38$ and a wheeler set for about 20$, Looks like some on amazon are identical to the wheeler and others copies of the Grace punches.

Starrett or Mayhew may be better options, but at more money for a consumable punch.

I've had this set from Mac over 30 years now and I have no complaints.

+1 for Mayhew, Starrett is the **** for steel, but for brass that's going to get beat up I'd go mayhew.

I wish I could go back in time to when I was in trade school and make myself a nice set for free....well sort of free.

Holy **** guys, thanks for all the reply's.

The Mayhew sets look like they will work for me. I hate how a lot of the other brands are really short. Seems they are a little more than I planned on spending but should last awhile.
