I'm not sure what the proper name is for the breaker box so I apologize if I used the wrong term.

Is there a formal or a website that tells you how many amps you need for how ever many circuits you're wanting to have? We have a pole shed that I am wanting to put power in. I'm going to have a 220 outlet for a welder, 1 circuit for 4 shop lights and 2 circuits for 110 outlets. I might put in a 3rd 110 circuit solely for an air compressor. I'm thinking a 200 amp box like in a house might be overkill for this.

Add up your branch circuits.
Two outlet circuits would be 20 amp each.
Welder most likely a dedicated 50 amp.
Lights, depending on type, 20 amp will easily cover.
Air another 30, most will trip a 20.
Now we're at 140 amp, leave room for growth.
200 is reasonable. You may want to add more in the future, you'll never delete any.

You dont add up breaker ratings to come up with a panel size because of load diversity.

You do a load calc instead.

With that being said, i highly doubt you will use even 60a @ one time.

Now if you want more space, you could get a 200a panel.

But a 100a panel would most likely suffice for a "shed."

Put in any size panel you want, doesn't matter. I would do at least a 12 space, 20 would be nice.

The feeder size is more important here. Is there wire already run? What are the details? If not, what are your plans

I paid 65 for a Homeline with 3 breakers, 100 main the other say, 20 space. Ypou can get a 6 space for 20 or so, and the breakers that came with the value pack would ad 15 so that makes it 35. I6ts not very convenient if you want to add, makes the net cost only 30 or so to get the 20/100, well worth it.

The only exposure I have is house breaker boxes and they are usually a 200 amp service.

Nothing ran yet and I detailed what I want in the OP. A 230 for a welder, 2 regular double outlets for 4 shop lights, an outlet for an Air compressor and maybe 3 or 4 double outlets for 110.

Whats the HP rating on the comp?

Agree, 200 AMP is probably overkill. 100 AMP panel should be adequate unless you are running multiple heavy items at once. One thing I can think of in this regard would be a plasma cutter. Need both the compressor and cutter going at the same time which could push a 100 AMP panel to the limits depending on compressor and cutter size and if anything else is running at the time. How big is the ‘shed’ in question? If it’s actually a garage and could have roll up doors you may want to factor that in. Also don’t forget about putting in some exterior lighting. A couple of outside outlets probably wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

I was referring to details on the wire.

How far will the run be? Distance combined with loads will tell you what gauge wire you need.

You'll need 4 conductors, plus two ground rods at the shed.

Oh there won't be any runs over 30 feet. The building is 24x12.

Load center is the fancy pants term for breaker box.

Everyone else will fill you in on the rest.

Along with the air compressor variables, do you already own a welder or have one in mind that you plan on getting? A 240V inverter machine may only require a 30 amp breaker, but I often see guys pick up an old transformer machine for cheap and then realize they might need up to a 100 amp breaker to fully utilize it.
