Breaker question

I bought a 90 amp breaker for my subpanel feed. It's an Eaton CH breaker. I'm having a difficult time stabbing it onto the bus bar. I noticed the breaker has these spring clip things around the contacts. Am I supposed to remove these clips before installing the breaker? I think it will install easily if I remove them but I don't know if they must stay on or not.

They need to stay, a little more pressure to get the breaker to seat will be required.

Those clips stay. It is normal for a large breaker to require some force to clip it to the bus. The tight connection is required to keep the connection from getting hot with a possible 90A current.

I installed that identical 90A breaker in my CH panel and it does take a bit of force to get it snapped into place.

What brand and model of panel do u have?

It's a Cutler Hammer panel. I don't know the model number but I can check when I get home this evening. It uses CH breakers though. Panel is from when the house was built in 1979.

Your just going to have apply a bit more pressure, only time had any real issue installing CH frame breakers was in a meter/main that was manufactured in Costa Rica.

Before you force it into place, please be sure to read the labels on the panel and the breaker and make sure this breaker is listed for use the panel you have. Only then push hard.

You should turn off the main breaker before you install the breaker (and wear gloves) in case your hand accidentally slips somewhere you don't want it to be :shocking:

100% - was thinking same thing. Good advice. The 70A in my far end and the 100A in the near end took considerable oomph to seat. MAke sure everything is lined up and push. Gloves and power off if possible to avoid issues with a slip when it sits down.

This is an old thread that was revived. I installed the breaker a few years ago, and it's been working fine.
