I see know one is throwing anything out there for you so I'll give you my best shot. :bounce:

Not sure how the codes are over in London but here you need to have a foundation dug, it gets inspected then they fill it with concrete and it gets inspected. After that the block footing goes in along with the brick around it then the slab. Everything is figured based on the engineers drawings. Maybe that will help a little for you. :dunno:

Block is the way to go, and once you have gotten the footer in the hardest part is done. Laying block is challenging at first and occasionally backing-up happens, but satisfying work. If tou are looking at doing about 20' square, I would try it myself.
I had gravel ground but still put a perforated pipe below footer leveloutside, and the footer sits on a bed 1-2" thick of crushed stone for drain. My garage is big so I used 12" block, therefore a 24" wide footer x 8" thick, 4 re-bar runs inside. That's overkill, I didn't get code or specs, just did what looked right. Re-bar and filled the blocks under the headers so they are a solid column.
Warmer than outside air until late in the Fall, and stay's cool all summer if the doors are kept shut. And when painted all the defects in the block work show, that way no one will try to con you into laying their blocks.
