Bridge the bench to wall gap.

I’m looking for ideas/pictures of your bench setup. Mine sits in a corner of the garage and has about a 1 1/2 inch gap from the bench top to both walls. Just hate when stuff falls into those gaps. I used to have an old countertop that was fastened to cleats screwed into the walls. Got rid of that, painted the walls and bought a nice free standing bench. Looks a lot nicer just not as functional.

I don't know why this condition exists but some here have put cubbys and trays at the back. A tray the size of a spray can holds all your lubes and cleaners. You can make about anything to fit back there including a 1 1/2" back splash.

There is a thread here called "Show your work bench" and there are tons of ideas.

Show us some pictures, so we know what you are working with. I used base shoe trim nailed to the wall above my counter top to close the gap.

^This. Close to the bench but secured to the wall. Lets the bench slide out but keeps the bench from tipping when you’re leaning in to your vise, if you have one mounted.

I found some decent options in this area. Some other good suggestions as well but I think I’ll pursue the spray can holder. Jegs has a few different versions and I’m kind of like the plain aluminum tray approach. Wanting to fill the gap and keep it functional. The wide open tray fits aerosol cans without restricting it to just those cans. Yes, it could double as a catch all but at least those items won’t fall into the gap.
I should have taken some pictures but you guys threw out good ideas even with my shortcomings. I’m usually just a lurker trying to learn garage setup and organization.
Thank you! You are truly appreciated and very talented.

I like a 2x fastened to the wall just above a free standing bench. I use a couple of pins or bolts through the 2x and bench top to secure it. Kind of the best of both worlds and is still quick to move.

Does the top separate from the legs easily? Could shift it to take up the gap.

Just make a backslash with a 1x2 or whatever size like the raised back of a laminate counter top.
I painted a 2X4 as long as the workbench is wide and lag bolted it to the wall so that t he lower edge of the 2X4 is the same height as the underside of the workbench top. Then, from the underside, I attached the workbench top to the 2X4 with Stanley mending plates.

I built an L-shape backsplash from 1x4 and routed out cuts for 2-gang electrical boxes on the face. Top was simple storage like cans.

1x10 screwed to the back of the bench so 7-8in is above the bench top. Screw a 1x4 or 1x6 to top of the 1x10 so it look like a T from the end with the back edge of the top piece against the wall.
Now you have a backsplash to stop **** falling off the back of the bench & it has a narrow shelf above it for rattle cans etc.

Could even add a strip of 1inx1/4 along the front of the shelf part so **** doesn't roll off it.
