I have the engine off my old Murray rider to replace the oil sump. I noticed some scraping/scoring on the cylinder wall....Anyone who can tell me if this is gonna be a big deal at some point?

It’s a Briggs and Stratton 11hp, 28C707 series....maybe 25 years old. Other than this oil sump I cracked near the drain plug (replacing this week), it runs fine. Inside of the oil sump was sludge free.

Well it is what it is at this point. If it ran ok before should be no change after. Looks like it ran low on oil at some point (likely related to your cracked sump).

Exactly. I don't know why some people here say Briggs are junk, but they are misinformed I guess. I've worked on some that are pushing 50 years old and never had an oil change:shocking: As long as they do have oil in them they are pretty indestructible.

I still have my 4HP Briggs I bought new in 1966. I do change oil in these engines every 2-4 years and never have had a failure.
Good maintenance on things that should have it makes time to do other fun things in life.

+1 on this, I seen some old briggs that shouldn't really run great when see state of bores/pistons but they do .
I got 2 briggs from early 50's and both run great, one perfect, other been worked hard and oil changes minimal bore pretty bad and rod bad too, gave it set of chrome rings and new rod when started smoking and after bedding rings in it totally smoke free and runs and sounds, comp tests like new lol.
most horrors all down to poor servicing and years of abuse .

If the engine is one that you rely on to make a living, I would replace it. If it is an engine that you really don't care about all that much, then repair what is broken and run it for as long as you can.
