A larger Britool 1/2" drive socket set box with removeable tray and underneath storage compartment.
Dimensions: L=20_1/2" ; W= 8_1/2" ; H= 4_3/8".
Height of removeable tray: 2" ; depth of storage space under tray= 1_7/8"
Some rust present due to water ingress while in storage.
Corner of removeable tray damaged, I reckon it'll need some heat to ease out.
Close-up of paint, seems to be the original red hammer finish.

Maybe from the sixties. My box has the nameplate riveted to the outside of the lid and inside has two slides in which a celluloid card lists the contents.

It denotes "British Made" which we believe was changed to "Made in England" c1956

Pity about the damage, soon after you spend hours fixing it a good'un will turn up for sure for sure......

They're nice boxes. Those removable trays came with the dividers in a few different patterns, I have one which suits the hex drive sets, different dividers to yours. There is also one for sale now on eBay with a 1/2" drive set which is different to yours and mine.

Britool catalogues

#this is an (updated) repeat of post 189 on this thread, just bumping here#

I'm hoping to put together some information here on Britool catalogues, they are a great resource for Britool information. I personally have catalogues 96, 104 and 109 and am in the process of scanning 104 and 109 in. Once I've done that, I will put PDF copies of all three up on dropbox for download by anyone interested. If anyone owns other Britool catalogues, why don't you scan those in too and we can share? It would also be nice to have a post here with pictures of all the front covers on, so I'll reserve the next post for that. UPDATE 26/5/20 - Catalogue 95 cover added

Here is what I have put together so far:

I'm back. Thought you may be interested in my 145 set. It originally belonged to my mum's uncle, who was a fitter for McAlpines in the 50s/60s/70s and has now been given to me via my dad. I need a few bits to complete it. Three of the AF sockets aren't original, nor are the Sliding T Bar (E70) or Swivel Bar (E79). The Ratchet Unit (E66), Stud Extractor (E92) and 3/8" Bar Handle for the plug sockets (A56) are missing. I'm hoping to complete the set with the correct period parts...

Let me know what you are short off as we have a few spares for this set

@melle, I have Catalogue 96 scanned in as a PDF (20Mb), but not the others yet, which are a longer term project. I can send you a drop box link if you PM me your email address, I'm not sure of how to provide a dropbox link in a forum post?

Does anyone happen to have the model numbers for the hex -> square drive and vice versa socket adaptors? Or if you even have spares to sell am definitely interested there too!

Hi there Jonlives

1/2" female square to male hex is: 3/16W OPES 1/2 SQ
Female hex to 1/2" male square is: 3/16W OSEP 1/2 SQ
3/8" female square to male hex is: 3/8"SQ - 8088 - 3/16"W
Female hex to 3/8" male square is: 3/8 SQ. APOS 3/16W

I bought mine a few weeks ago from eBay I checked the seller but all the ones he had are now sold. I just do a regular search and eventually what I was looking for came up but it did take some time..

Welcome to the GJ. Please post up pics and info of what you have, we all enjoy looking and sharing.

Hi Farmer J, thanks so much for the info - I'll keep an eye out for those!

I recently picked up a 40A socket set, as far as I can tell it's totally complete apart from the 1/4W socket being six-sided instead of 12, and came with a few extras too.

The info in this thread tells me it's likely pre-1960 as the ratchet and all the parts in the box are "British Made" as opposed to "Made in Britain".

Kinda got me hooked on this whole vintage tool thing, so I expect my collection will be growing soon :D

I had a search through my stash of .448 hex drive extra spare sockets, but unfortunately no spare 1/4 W in 12 point...

I have purchased a few cheap selections of hex drive just to get parts to complete my sets so now have quite a few other extra sockets and extensions and stuff, so let me know if you are looking for anything in particular.

Early Hallmark made in England?

IMG-8131.jpg

I have assumed that all Hallmark tools were made overseas but I've been searching around on forums and found some posts from a guy on a welding forum in the UK saying that he was a rep for Britool in the 80-90s and that he witnessed Hallmark tools coming out of the Cannock factory. Unless this guy was for some reason making stuff up then it would seem that some early Hallmark tools were made in England. I'm not aware of any earlier Hallmark spanners than the one in the pic so maybe it was made in England.

Not sure exactly what the Britool rep saw in the Cannock factory. I guess that it's possible that the spanners were made overseas and just stamped/polished in Cannock. :dunno:

As far as I’m aware, the early / original “Hallmark” was all British made.

I don’t own any but I’ve seen a few bits, and it looks to be first class. The patterns were similar to the regular spanners, but the finish was a high polished chrome, at a time when not all of the regular line was.

Not sure about that spanner you have. That’s different to what I saw, and I’m always suspicious of “England” without “Made in”, but is that one of the “C Series”. It looks like it might be, and the number suggests so. Can you give us a picture of the other side.

I was told Halmark was fairly short lived, as it was intended to be sold directly to the motor trade from vans, which didn’t really work out, as James Neil (Britool’s parent company) were desperately trying to sell through an ever dwindling number of high street shops. Another great management decision!

I think the name would have died out, but a part of the former Britool (I think it might have been the van sales part again) was sold off and were allowed to use the name.

As I understand, this never formed part of the sale to Facom, so they continued to use the name. They didn’t have any tools to sell of course, hence you have very “average Taiwanese” tools being sold under the Britool name, albeit “Hallmark”.

Of course, as soon as Facom got their paws on Britool they closed the factory, and used the Britool name on basically Facom patterns, but with a crappier finish, and softer steel.

Now Facom are part of Stanley, they are having their factories closed, and the Britool name has almost disappeared, except for the U.K. market, where there are still some idiots saying “oh yes, Britool are really decent”. Don’t think they’d know decent if it bit ‘em in the a##e!

Who was guilty? To quote Jeremy Clarkson “They all were...! Goodnight!”

Got another piece to add to the .448 hex drive collection. An adaptor from 9/32" square drive to the 3/16 W hex. I never knew these existed, wonder how many more hex drive pieces there is left to discover..!
It has 3/16W MSOP 9/32 SQ stamped on the side, and british BRITOOL made.

Two years ago I found my first Britool piece, a massive hex drive universal joint marked "BRITISH MADE", linked here. Earlier today I found my second, at the same flea market.

I am guessing this one is probably a little newer, but also marked "BRITISH MADE," which, according to fanders, makes it no later than 1963. I don't know what they call these across the pond, but over here we call them ratchet adapters, barrel ratchets, or cogs.

This one is a little unusual. Or at least I have never seen one function like this before. You have to loosen that little set screw to move the direction lever one way or the other, and then tighten it back up. Seems to be plated, but not chrome, or not well. The plate keeping the guts inside with a little retaining ring is not forged steel. Model number E76. It's 1/2-inch square drive.

Are they common or hard to find over there? I put an L-handle on it to give it a whirl. It works just fine.

Yet another .448 hex drive item has come to light, and joined my collection. :) It's amazing how many items have shown up that i never knew existed.. this is an alternative drive plug for the hex ratchet, and adapts it for use with 1/2" square drive sockets and attachments.
It has part no. OPEP and 3/16w - 1/2"af stamped on it.

Out of interest, does anyone still use 'Made in England' Britool combination spanners as their main spanners? Reason I ask is because they look to have the old style ring ends without off-corner/flank drive type teeth. I think all modern spanners are flank drive type now.

Just wondering if they still hold up against the newer designs?

Edit. Noticed Hazet 603 look to still be the old design.

I still use a couple of my Britool Whitworth combination spanners on my Last-off-the-line 2015 Land Rover Defender. They still do the job perfectly and hold up well as ever.
The designers must have been having a laugh, or harking back to the Whitworth days of the first one made. Although it's actually almost all metric fasteners the chassis and suspension bolt heads are 18mm and 21mm AF, so 3/8 and 7/16 Whitworth spanners fit them very well! The axle drain plugs are proper 'British Standard Taper Pipe Thread' with a 1/2" drive, though the steering swivel fill plugs are 3/4" BSP thread with a 10mm female drive..

I do. I have a fairly decent set of the older style long combination wrenches in both Inch A/F and Whitworth sizes. I use them together with the, very similar proportioned, Hazet 600’s in Metric.

The lack of “flank drive” is no issue whatsoever, although I’m generally using these spanners on older / higher quality nuts and bolts where it doesn’t really make a difference. The Hazet 600’s all have off corner drive now. I think the 603’s probably do too.

I should also say that I don’t really use combination spanners as my “go to”. I much prefer separate ring spanners and open enders, and I don’t use the open enders much. If I was starting again, I’d have both long and short ring spanners, and probably some flare nut wrenches, which is what I keep in my road box now!

Good to hear. Keep looking at Britool sets on Ebay. They don’t come cheap though.

Beautiful tools in this thread! I don't have that much Britool, but here's the ones I found:
IMG_0068.jpg

The pipe wrench is really cool I think, but I learned from this thread that it's not as old as I thought since it has a "Made in England" marking.

The 27mm wrench is in good condition, but unfortunately some chrome damage on the ring end.

Nice postings here which deserve a few comments.

What Britool catalogs show pipe wrenches?

The combo wrench shows a 1947 date for supply to the British War Department.

It is an early version with its 4 digit code preceding the RJ size series.

The 27mm combo is from the RJM series.

Any further details on the hex drive socket which looks to be of the same era?

Yeah, I couldn't find pipe wrenches in the catalogue pages in this thread.

I don't know that much about collecting British tools, but I have learned that the arrow means military issue. Could the AF size instead of Whitworth be for working on American vehicles perhaps?

Any approximate date on the RJM27??

The socket has 1920 after the Britool stamp. I don't know anything more, just a flea market find.

I'm unsure as to when Britool commenced making ROE combo spanners but would quess around WW2

Two pre-war motorcar makers that didn't use WW were Ford and Vauxhall-Bedford.

The RJM27 dates from late 1950's up for many years.

1920 is the part number for the socket, the hex drive is 0.445" or 3/16" WW.

For many years all Britool sockets were hex drive, finally phased out mid 60's.

Here's another addition to my .448 hex drive collection, a short speeder part no. 2041.
The standard 18" one is a no. 2042. I believe there was also a longer version made but never seen one.

Also managed to find a pic of an old advert for the 45A set which was the basis of my collection. Nice to see that for some reason they didn't include a 10mm or a 13mm in the metric sockets, so waste of time looking for those!

Would you be able to put up an image of further up the page please.

I recently obtained a set containing the small speeder and its case looks like that one in the peek preview.

I will have a look to see if we have one as we have a lot of spares we are clearing out, some is hex, most is Spanners and sockets, going add a spare Britool top chest to the sales section

Thanks Winchman. I saw the extra long speeder listed in one of those catalogue pages further back in this thread, but I don't expect they made many. They weren't included in any of the sets, that I could see.

The image is from an ad on eBay actually for a very nice Gordon socket set and the seller has included this as 'Original paperwork from when it was new' which it probably is, but it's not of the Gordon set..

I will post up some pics of a small set i have, instead.

From my experience you do see the odd thing turning up that isn't in the catalogue, I will try and look over the next few days

The image is from an ad on eBay actually for a very nice Gordon socket set and the seller has included this as 'Original paperwork from when it was new' which it probably is, but it's not of the Gordon set..

I will post up some pics of a small set i have, instead.

This page if from a tool resellers catalogue, some one on here has scanned the pages from the Britool one in the past hopefully he will be along soon.

Here's some pics of the 37A set I have with the short speeder.
I bought this set a while ago, before prices went so crazy. As it's in such amazing good condition I have just packed the parts in corrosion inhibiting paper, wax polished the box and kept it complete and original in storage.
Maybe it's an investment?
I have seen sets in the same tin as this but with Whitworth sockets, and also sets of the same sockets but in smaller tins with no speeder.

Yes, the tool seller's page has those Britool sets on one side, and J Bedford sets on the other..
Thanks for looking through your stuff. I have a few pieces that I have never seen in any catalogues, like the hex drive stud extractor. I don't have any catalogues of my own to refer to though, or access to scans of any.

For all those that love pics of that obsolete Britool .448 Hex Drive... here's the up-to-date collection, complete with the short speeder crammed in on the board:rocker:
