Broke Gear Box

Had someone stop by and see if I could help with a binding gear box for a tractor power take off. I opened it up and was amazed.. Only thing I can imagine is the guy stuck a grade 8 bolt in place of a shear pin.. Gears completely shattered. Needless to say, this one was heading to the scrap pile..

That doesn't look too bad to me, the housing is still in one piece.

Yeah I put a bolt in there. That stupid pin kept breaking off and the dealer wants $5 each.

I would not be too quick to blame the shear pin...from the looks of the pics, that large gear was cracked or poorly cast...

but I guess it doesn't matter long term, as they are all but throwaways now days.
