Broke my trusty sidecutters (diagonals)

A pair of USA Crescent that I've had for a long time. Dropped them.... Ugh

Looks like they'll still cut to me!

On another note, I'd get Channellock. Knipex and SO are nice but not really needed for the bulk of users.

Man, I don't know. As a Channellock owner and fan I still reach for those Knipex cutters. They're not terribly expensive, either.

It comes down to ~$30+ vs ~$15. And the latter is US made, will cut anything you need it to, is warrantied for life...

Granted I have both (and Klein, Cman, etc).

Thanks fella's for all the loving support for my loss. I actually have a pair of 7" Channellocks I bought a couple years ago, but they are so stiff. I guess I need to show them some love.

That's what I've always called them, and everyone that I've worked with.

You can get a new pair, Crescent 5428CVN 8" Heavy-Duty Diagonal Cutting Pliers. $35.10 Amazon Prime

I never knew. :dunno:

The knipex cutters (74-01-200) go on sale pretty often in the mid $20's...:A LOT of tool for the money, worth the small xtra fee.

Not that sears will be around that long, but the laser engraved 'craftsman' has worn off several pliers I bought back in the early 2000s and I doubt they'd warranty them now.

If you're in the market, get the 8" knipex.. don't get channellocks, don't get the Irwin/NWS fantastico cutters unless you have a very specific need to cut very thin, very hard material..

If USA made is important to you, then get Kleins instead. The heavy duty cutters are the best they make as far as material hardness, but the standard version are pretty good too. I still prefer the knipex over any others, and I've bought and used alot of different ones.

This is always confusing to me.... :dunno:

zero angle in cutting head + zero angle on handles - "side" cutters
angled cutting head + zero angle on handles - regular diagonals
angled cutting head + angled handles - offset diagonals (12 deg).

http://www.knipex.com/index.php?id=1216&L=1&page=art_detail&parentID=1367&groupID=1478&artID=2596

It's simple - diagonals can cut from the front of the tool. Stick them between a 1" gap of two 2x4's, you can cut something in front of the tool, using the NOSE of the tool..

Try the same with lineman's, and you can't cut anything.. you have to cut from the side of the pliers - hence "side cutters"

I use my NWS Fantasticos every chance I get, I've never had a problem with the limited cutter opening. Anything I can't fit in the Fantasticos I wasn't going to cut with regular diagonals anyway.

This ain't no ****...Take those stiff pliers to a HOT water spigot. While working

the pliers under a stream of hot water, they will loosen up. Every person I've

ever shown or told was simply amazed. My father showed me when I was

a little fella of about 5 and I've been fixing all sorts of pliers for 55 years now.

I got the 10's because ****** seems so 'high' (get it?) on Knipex, but I still have several other pairs of Channellock dikes for less intense duty and less $. They're all good for what they're good for. Jeremy has a good idea if you could get the tip profile how you'd like it. They'd go real good in your kitchen junk drawer.

I have many of the major brands that's discussed on here.. the 8" knipex are my favorites, but I have the 10" too.. the channellocks jaws were ruined after 2 hours the first day I used them at work. They are the only brand that did that.. even my $9 compound cutting crescents would last a year or two before the spring for the handles gave out, but they were so good and so cheap they were worth replacing.. they have the best shaped head and cutter tips out of any I own.. the knipex are just bombproof. I give them constant abuse and they don't even flinch. They are still in near perfect condition, where my kliens don't seem age so well. They work fine but look like their 25 years old after 5 or 7 years just from sitting around.

If I ever lost my knipex on a job site, I'd buy a new pair immediately.
