Broken IR 2235TiMAX, what happened?

Amazon "warehouse deal" so I couldn't take it apart. Just sent it back but curious what could've happened, and if it's a common problem with these. Already ordered another one of the same. It had clearly been very slightly used, so could've been the first guy that broke it, or from the factory.

Sounded like something was loose inside, so figured there was something up with it, and when I tried to loosen a lug it had almost no power. Vid is at 90psi, my older IR impact worked fine so not a line issue. End of vid shows the rattling noise impact makes when turned upside down

Well I’ve had one for a loooong time and she’s seen plenty of use. But mine has never done that. Almost sounds like someone took something out of it.

Edit: scratch that comment. I got mine out right now working on my skid steer and sure as hell it does have some clunk like that. Not as bad, but it’s there.

Have you removed the fitting to see if there’s an inlet screen that might be clogged?

Yes, I had to install my own fitting, nothing else came with this particular gun. There was a screen at the bottom of the inlet but it was clear. Good point about someone possibly removing a part. Now that you mention it I remember reading at least one guy bragging about doing that in the past, think on a different forum. Definitely a possibility. IR has always been great for me in the past so hopefully this was just a fluke - or a scumbag poaching parts

Definitely sounds like you are not getting 90 psig at the tool while it is running but it also sounds like there is more movement of the mechanism within the hammer case than there should be. There should be around .060"- .100" of axial movement of the mechanism. One possibility is that one of the hammers was left out and the sound you hear is the single hammer moving back and forth. When you get your new one make sure you jack up the air some.

True, could explain why it had half the torque and slower impacts too. The pressure did seem low which is why I checked with my old ir231, but that worked fine and putting an Aro gauge on it tonight it shows about the same as the cheap Husky gauge I have on this compressor's outlet for the time being, so seems like it was all in the impact. New one came in and works great

With the warehouse deals there is always the possibility someone bought and used the parts to repair his or it was defective from the start.

Make sure it's 90psi with the trigger pulled. You will get a lot more power that way depending on how long/size of air hose & fittings

I had a different model of IR tool do this. Something is wrong with the mechanism inside with the forward/reverse buttons.

It happened to mine, I took it apart - couldn't find anything wrong - threw it in a drawer and started using another tool. Months later I pulled it out, took it apart again and figured out the air diverter that the switch moves had slipped out of place - put it back and the tool has worked fine for several years since.

It needs to be 90 with the tool running free speed and technically the gage should be after the quick disconnect piped direct to the inlet.

My air impacts were gutless like yours until I swapped my fittings to high flow and turned up the regulator to 125psi to get 90psi continuous at the gun with the trigger pulled. They work as intended now.
