Broken Milwaukee drill - What to do with it?

A year or more back I was drilling a hole and the shaft just snapped on my Milwaukee 1/2" drill.
It's just been sitting here since then.

Is there any fixing this, or is it trash?
Not sure about warranty, I inherited it from my Dad, not sure how old it is.

Cat No. 0234-4 (This is hard to read, the 0 is almost illegible, may be an 8 or 6)

I've rebuilt a lot of corded electrical tools using replacement parts off of www.ereplacementparts.com I'd type the model # into the website and see how much it costs to replace the part. And why your ordering parts I'd order a extra set of brushes as their usually only a few bucks.

unfortunately i can´t find # 0234-4 on the Milwaukee site:

A spindle from a 1/2" hole shooter (but different model number) cost $16.-

so for about 16.- (?) i would try to repair it on my own . If only the spindle is defective and nothing inside, maybe "that´s it". The quality of newer tools often is lower than the old tools so i would try to keep your tool.

Milwaukee used to have an unlimited warranty. Do you still have the warranty paperwork for the drill? If so try contacting Milwaukee.

However now that Milwaukee is owned by the Chinese you might be SOL.

I had a polisher that had a broken trigger and took it to Milwaukee service center to have it repaired. I asked if they had the part, and was told that they did. When I went back a few weeks later, the gave me the polisher back in a box, totally disassembled, and missing parts, saying that they didn't have the part. I asked why they said that they did when I left it off, and was told that is the standard answer of the counter man, and he didn't have a clue. I bitched to the manager and got no satisfaction, except that he didn't charge me the "estimate" fee. He said it was a safety issue, and that is the only way that they could keep anyone from using a dangerous tool. That was the last time that I ever bought a Milwaukee product, and I wouldn't even buy one today if it was offered at half price. I even complained to the State, and they said that there was nothing that can be done except to take them to small claims. Back then, if I had the time to waste, I would have.

Was this an actual Milwaukee repair site or an authorized repair agent?

Yep, if we assume it's a 0234-1 (is it possible a couple scratches are making the 1 look like a 4?) and the serial number is 532B (I'm guessing B and 3 look similar on an old tag) the spindle assy looks to be item #48 in ereplacementparts' exploded diagram, and cost is $28.00

As for Junkman's botched repair, I see no mention of complaining to Milwaukee corporate? Would make much more sense to go there before complaining to a gov't agency.

I've previously emailed Milwaukee asking them to add certain tools to their cordless line, and received a comprehensive, timely response in "American" including a US-based direct phone number where I could contact the person responding.

I had the exact same thing happen on one of my Milwaukee 1/2" drills. Just haven't researched the repair part. Thanks for this thread.

You are exactly right.
The tag is scratched to hell and hard to read.
I looked over the repair parts and came to the same conclusion.
It will be nice to put this drill back in service.

Just a little update...

I purchased the replacement part (reduction spindle 38-50-5250) off ebay, shipping and all came in under $20 total.
The spindle came in today, I swapped it out, which took about a half hour, and now have a working drill again!

It was a pretty straight-forward procedure, had to press the old spindle out and new one in. One little tip to anyone looking to repair their drill, remove the keyway from the inside of the spindle before pressing it out, I didn't and marred the surface of the bushing.

Same thing happened to to my 3/8". Must be a flaw in in these models. Mine was repaired at the local Milwaukee aurorized repair center, cost me $30.00, but that was about 5 years ago...
