Broken Rat

Broke a 3/8'' drive Mastercraft Maximum flex head stubby rat today. Was kinda getting impressed at how it was holding up and then I smashed my knuckles as the ratchet let go inside. Should be able to get it replaced fairly easy tomorrow but what a pain it is to have it break when its only two months old. Also where are these ratchets made?

I believe they're produced by Stanley, but they are most certainly made in china/taiwan.

Wow Canadian Tires quality must be slipping.I've never seen that kind of breakage from that style ratchet even with the long flex handle.Usually just jumps out of gear without breaking the pawl.Quality breakage,nice!The ratchets are made in Taiwan for/by Stanree.

I know what you mean Caper I have other Mastercraft rats that i used to use a lot and the odd time you would have one that would slip but keep working. I thought the ratchets were made in Taiwan but I wanted to know for sure.

Also Caper, I do not know if the ratchets are different inside but this particular ratchet has the cheap push forward/reverse lever.

That may be the difference in them.I have the same one and it hasn't given me any trouble in years.Maybe you just caught a dud.

I would have thought that the stubby handle would give you LESS leverage on a bolt or nut, and made it very difficult to break such a ratchet as this one. I would have ASSUMED that stubby rats were only used in places where longer handled wouldn't fit...and that stubby's were chosen only when bigger ones wouldn't work.

Nope. I don't see how he could have broken that without a cheater pipe, unless it had a serious flaw in it. That head should hold a lot more torque than you can put on the 5" long handle by hand.

Yes on the Chineese. I looked at the tool isle at AZ and noticed the racks of Great Neck, I thought they were upgrading their tool section only to see Mmade in Taiwon ROC on them use to be U.S.A. Great Necks.
