Broken Snap On Rachet

I bought a used ratchet off of the forum a few years ago and have loved it. I went to use it today and the little lever that changes the direction has broken off. Can this be fixed? Will the snap on truck fix it or replace it? Is the fix hard to do?

A snap on distributor will fix it if possible. Not likely replace the entire ratchet.

The fix is easy if you have the correct tools and parts.

If you have access to a truck, they'll either have the rebuild kit, or order it. They're also generally not bad to rebuild if you have to put the kit in yourself.

You are not the original purchaser. I have tried to contact Snapon corporate to buy parts for a broken one I have and crickets. I consider that arrogant and disrespectful. They could have sent an AI generated FOAD letter to me stating their policy.

I suspect the dealer / operator is not going to be enthusiastic about taking time from his day to make a $10 sale. You have no ongoing business.

It depends. I had a 1980s era quick release ratchet that screwed up, but not bad, would just skip sometimes. I used that ratchet almost exclusively. The dealer gave me an 80 tooth replacement that is not quick release, and I almost never use it. I’ve used my SK much more. That was about 2010.

So I take it a snap-on warranty is only valid to the original purchaser?

Don't give him his gifts and don't buy them when you're old. Hoping to pass them on to your kids. Just enjoy them while you can
The warranty is to the original purchaser, according to the paper, but practically you can get almost anything replaced or repaired. In the late 1970s and early 1980s they even stopped date stamping tools, because the original purpose of the date stamp was to track for warranty purposes. They resumed about 1983. I have some 1978 stamped, have seen 1979, but never seen 1980-1982. I have replaced 1930s and 1940s sockets, and even exchanged SAE for metric. My experiences with dealers have all been excellent.

It would help to know what ratchet we're talking about. Gut kits are pretty reasonable on eBay if you can't get a dealer to sell you one, and should include that lever in most cases. If you can operate a screw driver, you can probably do the job yourself as long as you can source the parts.

If you're served by a dealer that you do regular business with then go that route.

I personally wouldn't pursue any warranty since you bought it used nor would I chase down any dealer you don't have a business relationship with and waste his time. Maybe look around for a rebuild kit or an organ donor on Ebay.

I fumbled my used F80 a few years ago and broke the selector when it hit the floor. Found a kit on eBay for $12 and replaced everything inside. Keeping the old parts around just in case.

I found a long handle 1/4“ ratchet in the street on a walk during lunch. Mechanism was locked up, and it had taken some abuse. I walked on to the SO truck outside a local shop and asked about a rebuild kit. Driver looked at it, asked me who I had stolen it from, then grabbed a rebuild kit and installed it before handing the ratchet back.

Nonsense on both. If they are willing to warranty it, I would absolutely let them. If they won't, I would damn sure chase down a tool truck to buy a kit. Odds are, they driver will rebuild it for nothing. Even if he doesn't, he will gladly sell you a kit.

Call customer service. They’ll send/sell you a rebuild kit. Never had an issue with tools or dating back to the 1970s.

No way to prove I was the original owner from my long gone, hand written, Snap On credit book as a teenager.

The price of Snap On has a markup of crazy proportions for a multitude of reasons. One is expected warranty rates. If Snap On won’t warranty then call back and get a different person. Also, drivers should fix it. If a driver won’t, find another one. Even morally, no one should ever feel bad getting a warranty on a Snap On tool, whether bought originally by them or not. Their shareholders are doing fine and they are meant to be lifetime tools. It’s half the reason people still buy them…

I busted my FL80 doing the kind of stuff you get the L one for. Contacted Snap-on customer service, told them my wife got it for me for Christmas (true) and asked if they could send me a rebuild kit.

They sent one out free of charge the next day. Pretty easy to replace all the parts, even comes with lube. Maybe they'll send you one too?

Couple months ago customer service balked at warrantying a ratchet I had of my dad's. They said warranty is to original purchaser only.

Meanwhile in the UK, when I busted my L doing that stuff, SO customer service gave me the details for my local guy who turns up roughly every 3 months. If the kit hasn’t been back ordered, I’d have argued it. Customer service is misnamed when it covers to Snap On UK.

They’ve offered to warranty most of my dads too chest I want to restore. Said they had everything except the drawers themselves and they’d ship it all out along with new paint.
