If you can barely lift the door then the opener isn't going to open it. The door needs to be just about neutrally balanced for the opener to work.

Well I can get the door open with the opener, but it's a little slower and I wonder if it puts too much strain on the other torsion spring.

You can't get them locally because the garage door opener doesn't trust harry homeowner to install them himself. They want to maker sure (for your own safety of course) that you pay hundreds of dollars to have a qualified slackjaw install the spring.

Do this too many times and you will have to replace the opener as well as the spring since you will probably burn out the motor.

I agree with the others that it will cause more damage to items working now. Wait till you can get a new one put on.
If you have never done a door spring or you are not mechanically inclined I would not attempt to do this on your own. Many of injuries due to the spring releasing its energy as well as not using the correct tools.

I do almost everything myself but I had someone replace my springs. The springs are supposedly good for about 10,000 cycles and a rough figure of how long since I built the building and how many times of use per day, the number is spot on. They recommended replacing both, or I would be calling in a month or two for the other one. I had them do both.

It is not a bad job. I got the local Garage Door guy to sell me the replacement springs and understand that the two 1/2" diameter rods that you will need to wind the springs need to be fully inserted and one needs to be engaged at all times before the two set screws are loose. Also agree that both springs should be replaced at this time.

I had one break a couple winters ago. Since it was January and the temps were around -10F I elected to have a garage door repairman come out and replace it instead of doing it myself. He had the job done in about 10 minutes flat, and the price was quite reasonable.

When I had my doors installed the installer said to give them a good spray of lub. at least twice a year. Seem like a good idea!
