Broken tap extractor

I just saw this from Travers Tools. I've removed thousands of broken taps over the years using an Elox machine, carbide drills, and mainly carbide end mills. These look beefy enough to do the job. I thought I'd post it up if anyone is looking for a way to get broken taps out. http://www.travers.com/41565-15-937...88536&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Emailvision

I believe this is in the Enco hot deal catalog for 109, add in a coupon or two and you can get it cheaper then that.

I have set of Walton tap extractors that work pretty good.

I've never had any luck with them. But then again, the broken taps I normally have taken out for people usually was broken off by machine tapping and not hand tapping. They were buried too hard for a Walton extractor to remove. About all it would do is bend the tangs on the extractor.

Also a lot of taps that I had to take out were 0-80's, 2-56, 4-40, and a lot of 6-32's. Also our shop used a lot of spiral taps and the extractors would not work on them. Using a carbide end mill, I never ran into a tap I couldn't get out but they will tear the heck out of an end mill.

If you have the means, this is the best way to out a tap... especially if you were machine tapping!

I just purchased the Wilton extractor kit today.
They're going to be put to the test tonight, removing a broken tap in a Ford V10 head.
Wish me luck.

Walton tap extractors work great with a cordless variable speed impact gun. Squeeze the trigger and slowly increase the juice until it starts turning.

Don't bother using them with a wrench, that instantly mangles the fingers 90% of the time.

I can honestly say they typically dont work. The walton tap extractor that is. But every once in a while they will. Cutting them with a carbide bit or carbide end mill usualy is the safest fastest way.
