This is why you need a usa made vice. Was clamping down on an axe head with less force than its seen before and it popped. Must have had a hairline Crack before.
Any recommendations on a new one?

Wilton. With things like vises, it's best to buy it and forget about the cost.

JT: my guess you might find an old MADE IN ENGLAND Record or one of the old Canadian made vices on your Craigslist like advertising. or an old Reed, Rock Island or several others. what's your budget? It would cost to much for me to ship you one across the boarder, but if you are in B.C. maybe I could make an excuse to meet you in Bellingham with one.

sorry for your loss and sad to see a vice crumpling up like that.

good luck

Its no loss to me as it was cheap to begin with. I appreciate the offer but I'm in n the prairies so that's not an option. I am looking for under 300 bucks or so depends on the vise. I will look for a used one but i can't go forever without a vise so i will be buying one soon.

Something old, and big, and American or English...

Restore it...

Use it for the rest of your life...

Will it to your grandson, and tell him to will it to his grandson...

Several years ago, I purchased a new vise. Then life got busy and I left it in the box. A couple years later, I opened it and the jaw had been welded on crooked from the factory. I took it back to the retailer where I purchased it at, Explained what had happened. They first told me it was out of warrantee, After they looked at it, They agreed that it was made that way and replaced it. I didn't have to get snotty.

If you've even read a few pages of the MASSIVE thread
. . . . . The Vises of Garage Journal
. .
. . . . . you would have already known that what you were using . .
. . . . . . . . . was NOT a vice . . . . NOR a vise !!! :D

A . . VICE . . . would have been a . . . Record . . . . . Made in England
. . . or . . .
A . . VISE . . . would have been Made in USA . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . Reed, Athol, Starret, Wilton, Columbian, etc, even Craftsman !! ;)

Read the Vise Repair 101 thread and buy a used vise/vice and restore.

***** about your old vise. For a replacement, you're looking for something big and old. Keep an eye out for estate sales and yard sales, I've found several this way, and never paid more than $30, including a Wilton bullet and a big Prentiss that weighs over 100 lbs.

Reminds me of the harbor freight one I bought. I was clamping something and the outside jaw just snapped off. I wound up scraping it with other stuff like 3 years later

Older Craftsman vises with Japan cast under the base are hidden gems in my opinion and pretty easy to come by. Very stout and they don't command tons of cash. They went all the way up to 5.5".

My grandpa had an old York vise i believe. It's big and stout. I'll talk to grandma and the grandpa's sons to see what the chances are of getting that. If not i may just order a record and be done with it.

Sears has some decent priced Yost vises,, Yost 203 or Yost 204 for $250 and some change. Made in MICHIGAN and strong as a bull.

Anyone on here have any expierence with these Yost vises?

Only an older 3 inch model ( 30 plus years) well built can take abuse no problems. I can not speak to todays quality though. I am with most find an older one and refurb it use it and be done.

JT: I would think Yost vises are built with quality. I have yet to hear anything bad about them even though as I mentioned I don't usually shop or deal with NEW vises. I've also heard good things about Parkinson which I believe you can get in Canada.

note the fact that a big 6 inch Record or English made vice usually weighs about half of what a 6 inch old US vise does. the new 6 inch US made vises don't have the weight of the old ones hence my liking the old ones more.

good luck

Depends on which 6 inch vise you're talking about. I believe the Yost 34C is comparable to the older ones. Shipping weight is listed at 165 lbs. Of course, it lists for around $1300 new.

Al: I stand corrected, but as I mentioned I don't research or even pay much attention to new ones and only occasionally see how much they cost. of course if we get over $1000 there are many good choices in vises with some heft.

my thinking was a 6 inch Wilton Tradesman weighs maybe 80 pounds as do most of the 6 inch vises under $1000.

I own a few of them, I have a 103, a 203 & a 203.5 - EXCELLENT BUILD QUALITY AND DURABILITY. They do have a cheaper line of Chinese made vices and their quality is not nearly as nice as these MADE IN MICHIGAN BEAUTIES

If you are looking for something larger, the 80c is a 105 lb 8" vise.

http://www.sears.com/yost-80c-8inch-tradesman-pipe-bench-vise/p-00932149000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1

Apply as many SYWR rewards, a $10off,, and on top of that the SEARS35OFF300 ($35),, and you'll get about $50 in future SYWR points..

^ ^ Your replacement "vise" just can't be considered and used as a vise . . .
. . . when it can break that easily. It needs to be relegated to a "Holding Device" for simple work . . . but not VISE work !! ;)

Surely you can quickly find a bona fide vise on CL in your area. Heck there are lots of great vises on Ebay if you can track one down in your area that you could pickup in person, rather than shipping. Good luck.

CNG: JT lives in Canada so Craigslist doesn't get the activity it does here in the US. also their online ad with a bunch of i's and j's in the name isn't a lot better so JT has a little dis advantage. you can't always find a vise on Craigslist in some areas is what I hear a lot hence me trying to pass on a few that were just waiting to be restored or kept as shelf vises.

Peter: are we seeing double or do you have two nice welding benches set up with Yost vises? nice looking shop.

^ ^ ^ My bad missing OP was in the great white North !! ;)

Maybe a GJ get together in parts of Canada could "share the USA vise love" and get the GJ Transport going to get the OP a piece of old iron !!

That Yost pictured above . . .
. . . . . would be like a Abrams tank compared to the OP's wimpy broken Yugo vise !! :eyecrazy:

+1 to watch for Zoro sales on Ridgid F-45 . .F-50 . . or F-60 vises. OP would NOT be breaking any of those any time soon.

Heck surely Amazon delivers to Canada . . . $248 for the Ridgid F-45

Jt, you mentioned your grandfather's York.---You said it was big and stout.---If it has 6'' jaws, that was their biggest one and you are right.---If you can get your hands on it you, do it, you can't go wrong.---I have the #60, #100, #125, and #150.---If you need one quick, grab that one, you probably won't be looking any farther.

But I have agree on the Yosts.---They are some of the best, new and old.

Two more not shown are a #6 on a swivel base and my favorite, a G.M. Yost Swivel Jaw that's the same size as the Prentiss #22.---Thought I was buying a Prentiss #22, that was what was advertised.---Same size and weight, but was a 1908 G.M. Yost.---It is so buried right now but I will have to prove it eventually.---If you go with a Yost you won't go wrong either.

I ordered several Yost vises at work based on the Yost reputation and found them "Made in China". Make sure that you are buying the higher line USA vise.

I have one of these, they are definitely a hidden gem.

I had the same vise and it broke the same way and it hit me in the chest and damn near punctured a lung, bled like a stuck pic. I found this old vise at the salvage yard and it works good, I won't break it.

I don't actually own a 80c, I would if I had space,, that pic was taken from the yost website.

Good quality vises are stupid expensive new. Buy one used at a flea market, pawn shop, or craigslist. Anything old and USA or English made will do you well. I have a Wilton and a Columbian myself.
