I bought this vise recently, (A Morgan 40, Chicago) and stupidly assumed the small bit of brazing that was visible behind the jaw was just that...small. I was hoping some idiot had just knocked the very edge off and then tried to fix it.
I'm trying to figure out how I should approach this. I figure I have 5 options:
1. leave it as is.
2. Find a welder that can weld cast iron and see if they can improve the original fix.
3. mill off the whole part that sticks out, and mill back a little ways...create an extra thick jaw for it (sort of Wilton style).
4. Place a dowel pin the width of the channel in the jaw insert, just to the right of center, basically in the middle of the missing part to provide extra support.
5. Fabricate a new jaw insert that has the channel on the left and the right, but has a rectangular protrusion that would extend into the dynamic jaw body where the missing section is (that would be milled out deeper there).
Any thoughts? I may be making too big a deal of this...
