The rivets that hold the lead screw in place just broke. I was wondering how to go about fixing this? I need to use the vise this weekend to install new ujoints on the axle shafts in my ranger. Was going to cut down a 5/32" drill bit and stick it through both sides as a temporary fix..

Just use any steel rod you have to hand which will fit the hole. Even a bit of brass brazing rod would be fine. It's only literally to pull the front jaw along with the leadscrew when opening and to keep the leadscrew located, so it doesn't take any massive strain.

i have to second the don't use the vise as a press or there will be a lot more damage to that vise than a pin or screw breaking. can you show a few more full size pictures of your vise because your vise isn't familiar to me and i own a few Wiltons and have seen a lot of them?

i have seen presses on Craigs for as little as $20 and really nice ones for $100 if you have room for a smallish one in your garage that should do all those jobs your vise was not meant to do. don't use your vise as an anvil either.

good luck

But putting U-joints together doesn't take much. That's a pretty light duty pressing task.
