Brown and Sharpe Magnetic Surface Guage Dumb Question

Picked up a Brown and Sharpe 7743 magnetic base. Trying to get two pieces of the spindle lock to move with respect to each other. Soaked in PB blaster for a week.

Any suggestions on how to separate the two parts without marring them too badly or shearing off the shaft? Or am I fundamentally not understanding how these parts go together?

Thanks in advance!

Another machinist tool nerd, I see. :bounce:
I have had this gage for a number of years. The sleeve should loosely float over the axle bolt. Try tapping it firmly on something hard.

I found it for cheap at a gun show (always at least one guy with machinist tools at a gun show). He asked me if I even knew what it was, and I did- and I got a decent deal on it. I don't see a lot in this area with tons of retired and retiring machinists... although they are all over ebay.

Here is a crappy shot of all my bigger magnets.

Top:
-Brown & Sharpe no. 7743 magnetic surface gage
-B&S no. 744 "doghouse" mag base
-B&S no. 760 magnetic block

Middle:
-Kanetsu made in Japan (typical mag base size for reference)
-Tesa made in Switzerland with side mount
-random magnet chunk I found stuck to the outside of a metal scrap hopper, with a sticker that says WARNING MAGNETIC FIELD in English and French. What it's from, no idea. But it's strong. :dunno:
-Last but not least, Mighty Mag.

Just started being a machinist tool nerd a few months ago. Yeah, it took some pretty hard raps with a brass hammer to get the pieces apart. Something had put some some decent spiral grooves into axle piece. Chucked it up and clean it with emery. Pretty loose now but usable. It is ready to go onto the wheel truing stand now.
