I picked up this set and it's missing the longer ruler. The protractor is frozen and the bubble is missing would pb hurt this? Does anyone have an extra ruler for sale?

It looks like you have a square and a center finder for the 3/4" wide rules and an angle and center head for a 1" wide rule. I've found that most brand rules will fit these so you don't have to be brand specific on the rule. If you have others then you might want to hold out for an 18 or 24" rule. You can buy the rules from most machinists vendors.

I use Hoppes #9 gun solvent on my finds like that. Removes most of the gunk and leaves things working smoothly.

Try the PB, shouldn't bother anything. Those protractors have a very tight precise fit. freed up a couple a few weeks ago, just used whatever penetrant I had around the shop. The stuff Larry mentioned would probably help to keep them working smooth.

Looks like a nice find. Several years ago Popular Woodworking did an article on must have tools / features / sets that we never use. One of the items mentioned was the bubble in the head of the combination square. I picked up a 100 year old Starrett a while back. It came with a beautifully designed and well worn art nouveau inspired head, only problem was the glass vial was broken. At first I put it back, but then it occurred to me I might be able to replace it. When I got it home I remembered that article. My plan now is to fit it with a well polished tropical hardwood dowel that will accent the rest of the design.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I picked up a bottle a while back and had no idea what I was going to do with it. If it is good enough for firearms, it should be good enough for fine steel tools.

Check the clamp screws on the protractor. I bought a complete Lufkin set and King Kong had somehow tightened the protractor clamp screws so tight I had to use pliers to loosen them.

The smaller sets usually command decent money from what I've seen. If you get the larger scale and a square head for the larger set, you'll have complete sets in both sizes. Then if you need, add larger rules.
