Budget Homebuilt Cabinets

I just finished hanging these two cabinets that I built over the past two weekends. I took the design from an issue of Family Handyman magazine. The case sides are cheap melamine type particle board that I cut up from a double door RTA storage cabinet that I picked off the curb in the neighbor hood on trash day. The door front and cabinet back are some scrap, black painted pegboard that I have had laying around my shop. The outside of the cabinets are painted with Rustoleum Gloss Regal Red. The shelves and insides are painted with some leftover gray latex satin, except for the black pegboard back panel. The shelves are adjustable and I can hang items from the inside back panel if need be. Total low budget build.

Great looking cabinets! :bow::bow:

Clever use of pegboard for the door skin. Practical and looks cool too. :thumbup:

Plus, you can't beat the color choice.

Great looking for sure. Two questions:

Any issue with the red spray paint (I assume) not sticking well to the melamine?
Are the back sides of the peg board hooks very notceable from the outside?

Thanks Dan and everyone else also. I have had no issues with the paint sticking, but the sides were sanded pretty good. I actually had to fill some holes in the sides as these were mostly cut from the doors of the original tall cabinet. I used wooden dowels cut and glued in to fill a couple of holes where the hinges had been, so The cabinets were sanded good to sand the dowels flush. The paint is actually from a quart can, thinned with mineral spirits, and rolled on with a dense foam roller. You can see the back of the pegs on the doors. You can see some of them in the photos, but it doesn't bother me.

Nice work I always build my own and use the pegboard for door panels. I like that you built the doors thick like that so you can store stuff on the inside. I usually use the pegboard for hanging tape and misc stuff on the outside. Great job.

Your cabinets look great.

I see you are using peanut butter jars. I started using them in the last year and love them.

Thanks for the compliment. I really like using the peanut butter jars as well. I have several of them scattered all around with all kinds of hardware and junk in them.

You did an excellent job on the cabinets, I really like the use of pegboard!

Do you have a magnetic holder on your electrical panel? Magnets may interfere with the breakers.

Thanks for the compliment. Yes I did have magnetic holders on the electrical panel. I should of known better myself, but I was previously warned in another post and have removed them. Thanks just the same though.

Thanks demondriven. Building the doors like this was fairly simple. Following the directions from the magazine, I built the cabinet boxes, then cut all around with a circular saw to create the doors. I built two of these cabinets in a larger size for my workshop area. These are built from the same curb find cabinet and a sheet of 4x8 pegboard that my father-in-law gave to me. I have hung stuff from both sides of these doors with no problems. Here are some pics.
