You can try Automation Direct, and put a variable frequency. Drive” vfd”on it. They also sell them on Amazon.
the "best" option from them is the durapulse GS23-2015, 15hp rating, 7-1/2hp with 1-phase input. should have plenty of torque to actually start up a SPL compressor motor. about $600.

Why a VFD over a native motor?

Seems to be adding more complication than I need.
you get soft start, the ability to run slower RPMs (for noise), no motor rated contactor necessary, etc. it's probably a wash on price, motor + starter or single phase input VFD. depending on the design of the compressor, you may need an unloader for a VFD driven setup to get moving. you can cheat SOMETIMES with a DOL motor, and you won't care unless you look at the inrush. or your neighbors complain about the lights dimming.

VFD's are cheaper than a new motor, and 3 phase motors are inherently "better" than single phase motors for a variety of reasons.
I checked my go-to, also $600 and up, depending on if you want the IP66 conduit ready version or not.

not bad. I was looking at a true 5HP VFD. compressor starts need all the help they can get. the 15hp unit I mentioned should be able to provide near grid-level starting ability having the output stage being 3x the motor size. rated output is 49A 3ø [24.5A 1ø]. DOL single phase motors often pull 5x nameplate.
