We need to build about a 60 foot fence inside our yard. Its basically just to keep the dogs in the yard (which are poodles) So, 4 feet would work. Im thinking , 1 man gate and a 10 foot gate( to sneak a car through if i want to stash one behind the shop). The 10 foot gate would rarely open, so if had to pull a panel or unbolt a section or something to open it, no big deal. Any ideas?

For only 60 feet I'd get a bid from a fencing company.

I don't know what kind of sensible or idiotic rules your local government has about fences, but I would check on those without giving your name and address. Yes, I'm paranoid.

To build a fence yourself, the simplest way is to get metal T posts and a hand post driver, put the posts in and hang wire. Dog pen wire is close meshed woven wire and the kind I'm familar with is 5 feet high. To keep small dogs in you need close mesh wire.

Gates of various sizes can be bought from a farm supply store. Don't know the prices. Of course, you will need more that T posts to hang gates from.
Treated wood posts would work, they will be a few dollars each. I think you are in Canada so you need to find out about how deep the posts must be because of ground freezing, I don't have a clue about that.

If you weld and have access to scrap metal, you can make gates.

Check for sale ads. Often people get rid of fencing for one reason or another.

Here is my kennel i put up this spring. Made out of 4x4 posts with 2x4s going across and i just stapled the chain link to the 2x4s. I didnt like the all metal look going completely chain link, so this was my compromise. 2nd picture of my 10 ft gate, just in case a car or trailer needs to occupy the space!

How about a radio fence, where you bury a wire and the dogs wear shock collars? I use one to keep my cat locked in.

I was out for a walk last night & stopped to talk to a guy about his fence. It's a 6', solid fence. Turns out it's made by Trex. Installed price?? $42. Not a section - a foot! I started adding up the sections I need to do and it would be about $7,000 (160 ft.). I'll stick build it, thank you very much.

The Trex fence is really nice, though.

If you keep the dogs in it get some 2 foot wide chicken wire. Lay it down on the ground to keep the dogs from digging under the fence to get out.

If you are just wanting to keep in the two dogs, I HIGHLY recommend the underground dog fence. I I just took a lawn edger to make the very small space needed for the wire. The kit I bought was one of the nicer ones and it was $300 and it included enough wire to fence in a half acre yard. Just remember, the "beep" of the fence will happen a few feet before the actual wire so you might need to step it back a couple feet.

They also make a wireless version that covers a circle of whatever diameter you set (up to a limit). We tried one of those but I found it hard to set the size of the circle and more than anything, just didn't fit my yard shape well.

I have one of those and it didn't work out so well with my dog. I ended up stringing about 200ft of 1/8" cable from near the house to the woods to make a dog run. Funny thing is I can hook a chain to his collar with nothing on the other end and he stays in the yard. Nothing on the collar and he is gone in 1.2 seconds.

As far as the cheap fence, stand pallets upright and pound T Posts in the middle. If you pick out matching pallets it won't look 1/2 bad even.... and it's almost free!

Chain link is easy enough. You could do 60' easy in a couple of days, one day to set the posts and string the fence the next. Not that big a deal. The fence is cheap, top rail cheap, line posts fairly cheap, end posts not too bad. They nick you on the small parts for sure LOL. I have a 10' gate in the back behind the shop on a section of 6' chain link - made the gate from corner pieces bought at McCoys and top rail. A couple of hinges and all done. It rarely opens, so max strength is not required. The corner clamps have wire tie holes so you can string a diagonal to support the gate.

From experience - if your poodles acquire a J. Bond Jet Pack or read any books by Harry Houdini, then forget the wireless, dog run, etc - go right to electric fence. Your chain link supplies the grounded zone and you can string one wire along the top. If they dig, you string another wire along the bottom. A $40 charger powers the fence. Cheap and effective. The pups will play hell getting around it. It was the ONLY way to keep our boxer/kangaroo/squirrel mix dog in the yard.
