OK,
So I'm not supposed to be buying more stuff as I'm trying to clean up my act as seen in the Grunge Garage thread below in my signature line. BUT I see a Buffalo Drill Press on CL. Call the guy and he's waiting for a return call from a guy from far away who isn't sure if it's worth the trip. I wait a few hours. I call him back and find there is a crack on the clamp that holds the table but it is properly brazed long ago. He wants $125 but he will take $110. 85 year old guy who just is giving up unused stuff. I will pick it up in the morning. So sue me...it's my reward for all the hard work. What a replacement for my cheesy Black and Decker table top model. Here is the description:

A 71/2 inch (He's wrong, it's a 15") 5/8 chuck five speed 1/2 hp. buffalo commercial press. With a compound milling adjustable vise.
It's a very heavy commercial press and it will take at least two men to get it out of the basement. (It's not a commercial press, just a good old HD American one) Link to Vintage Tools. (Same press, but I didn't steal it like this guy for $10):

Photos (The light grey vertical post behind it is a basement column):

I've been wanting one for a while too. Spending my last money in the world on it. But geez.........just look at it! Wife doesn't know I took the hundred from her purse. May be another shooting here in Detroit.

Avatar is the flag of The City of Detroit, showing the French (Lower left), English (Upper right) and American (Other two) ownerships and heritages. Middle shows when the town burned down except one house and was rebuilt in the early 1800's.

Don't know if the thread exists, but eventually I will restore this and photo and thread it.

Smart Move!
Around here they often go for $200.00 - $500.00, I've even seen em for $700.00 (probably the guy who out bid me at auction for $250.00) BUT I don't know if they ever sell at those high prices.

Often the difference between a deal and NO DEAL is just a few dollars. I originally offered him $100, but he said he would wait for the call back from the other guy at that price first. So I offered $10 more to clinch the deal. Sometimes I have offered money for a free item on CL to get to the head of the line and get it. Being willing to meet the sellers schedule for pick up also helps. Being able to go RIGHT NOW saves a lot of deals.

Couple of things.
Chuck is Jacobs 0-1/2" not 5/8"
Table has a beautifully described arc of pits drilled by drilling through the object being drilled and into the table. http://garagejournal.com/forum/images/smilies/eyecrazy.gif
All the other items seem to be there.
The handle that tightens the table to the column has been broken and welded. Not perfect but functional.
US Navy info etched into the drill case in back.
Interesting cover over belts held in place with magnets.
Has number "4" stenciled on front belt cover.
Bearings are suspect as there seems to be some movement and sound is not smooth.

I also have a Buffalo model 15, but mine is a tabletop. I found it a few years back when someone was tossing it out for the trash. My lucky day.

Ok Bill so do you want to start the show us your cool " old " drill press thread or should I with the 1959 Craftsman 15" I picked up yesterday :D. I was gonna tell you the easy way to move it is to drop the table and head unit as low as you can on the pole but I see you already got it moved :D.

Rick,
Thanks for the method. but it wouldn't have worked as well here. The DP was in the basement. But it would work great on a first floor removal.
In this case I tilted the DP over and rested it on the front edge of the table. Then I removed the entire head and motor assembly and carried it by hand, bodily up the stairs and deposited it in the truck. I set the DP back up and slid the table up and off the column and took it up. Then I used the dolly to bring the base and column up the stairs. I have found that a hard tire dolly doesn't work as it gets caught under the lip of the stairs tread nosings. I use my air filled tire dolly as it has some bounce and will climb around the nosings.
My phone died this morning so I had no way to contact the seller as we had planned. I got there 45 minutes after the planned call time so I didn't know if he had sold it to the next in line, but he had saved it. So I wasn't about to fail to get it up the stairs even if I had to bear hug it and drag it up bodily.....

Nice DP BTW! My brother is looking for an old C'man HD one. Don't know the model.

I don't know if we can make this an old DP thread or if we should start another one, or if there is already one..........moderators.....can we rename this thread?
