I'd seen this back in the lurking days and had forgotten about it. Incredible pictures both winter and summer, thanks for sharing those - they'd make great calendar or post card shots or just blown up and hanging over the fireplace.

Would like to see sliding door details - how well did you get them sealed up and rodent or bug proof? I built a steel frame with metal siding sliding door on me previous shop and got it reasonably sealed up from rodents with some rubber conveyor belt strips but never found a good way to insulate or get it very airtight.

Thanks for the compliments Chilliwack.
Not sure where you're seeing sliding doors. They are all just regular barn doors opening to the outside. The years of sun and rain exposure are beginning to take their tole on them too, I will need to reinforce them soon.
I'll be posting my next build shortly. Calling it the Burage. Will be of an early (1930's/40's) Buick Dealership theme.

BTW, love your signature line. Everything happens for a reason, but sometimes the reason is you're stupid and you make bad decisions. I just today "made the decision" that my wife and I are going to build the new Burage instead of having part of it subbed out. So I hope that doesn't end up applying to me.

My mistake on the doors, I see that now. I thought they were two sliding doors. That decision will at worst be a lesson but more likely and experience.

I had to sub out more than I would have liked up to this point - all the excavating, most of the framing due mainly to availability of my time but most of the rest will be up to me. Where I did make a choice to sub out was the roof, mainly for safety reasons... They could do it safer than I could with all their safety gear... I didn't need to take that chance.

Thanks guys. I was really sweatin those ol long leaf pine limbs breaking under the weight of the snow that they are not use to getting though. Luckily it didn't happen. We took down several other pines around the barn when we built but I just couldn't bring myself to take down that twin pine. So far it has been appreciative and not made me regret it.

Ha! I just noticed you were in Athens. Not much snow there for sure. Neat town though...have a friend that lives there, and have visited a couple of times.

Thanks Dyno Dave. Holler next time you're down, I'll invite you over and try to convince you "Wouldn't you really rather have a Buick"

Very awesome barn! The winter pictures look great!
Thanks Jesse, pretty maybe but wouldn't hurt my feelings if I never saw it again.

As per many of the previous posts, you have one awesome barn:thumbup:
The attention to to detail is incredible. Well done.
Any progress on the " Burage " at this point in time?

Thanks 1/2 Cup. I just build the way I think things should be built. Sketch it up and build it.
All the rain and cold has sorta put off my starting the actual build. Drilling holes and trying to plant poles in soppin wet Georgia clay isn't much fun, not to mention clay has to be at optimum moisture content for good compaction. I am taking advantage of the time though to get all my materials together. I am helping tear down a couple of old chicken houses and getting some beautiful old tin and yellow pine. Guess it's about time to start another thread. Maybe the next rainy day....

Glad I stumbled upon this gem. Perfect pair to my morning coffee. What a great place you have! You seem to really enjoy it and that's all that matters. Loved the Century photos. The open space, the house, gardens, barn... Paradise! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks guys.
J-man, I had been looking for that Century for over 10 years, had heard it was in upstate New York. Doing my daily scan for '54 Buicks on CL and THERE IT WAS. A 3 speed Century. Only 3 known to still exist. Had some Buick friends up that way check it out for me and was soon on my way to just above Syracuse to bring it back to Buick Gardens. Hope it's OK to show her off here. Her name is Morning Glory...

Thanks guys. Chilliwack the pics were taken last spring right after I got the car home.

Some of you have been asking for build photos of the barn so I went digging. I KNOW there are more pics but these are all I could find right now, will be looking for more as I want to restore my confidence that I can do such a build before I get started on my new one in a couple of weeks (if the weather and red Georgia clay ground ever dries up)

These show the construction of what I refer to as the "Son Rise-Son Set" feature in the front gable of the barn. It is of course the well known and variously referred to Rising Sun/Sunburst/Sun in Glory feature often used during and since the Victorian period. I call it "Son Rise-Son Set" (intentional play on spelling) because I started the work of it at day break and nailed the last board with sparks being seen because the sun was setting. Our "son" had just been born a few days prior to that and SOME WHERE is a picture of me holding him in the door way of the barn. GOT to find that one. I know, my scaffolding build is scary isn't it. Specially the board on concrete block technique. What was I thinking?

edit) By the way, this was back in '89.

Nice pics of the original build.
Looking forward to see the step by step of the new one. Weather here has been lousy, but today is the first day of spring and it really feels like it.

Thanks Dave, hope to be creating a new build thread soon. And yea, I'm ready to start work on it, tired of planning and talking. The site had about 4 days of dry weather but will likely receive rain tonight. I am going to spread some 10 ft wide plastic over the line where the poles will be in hopes that will help keep it from getting saturated again. Laminated poles are suppose to be delivered Tues so want to get them in the ground next week.

Your barn -- the cars -- the setting -- it's beyond beautiful! I want to come back and take it all in again -- but I need to subscribe now. Thank you for sharing the photos of your wonderful surrounding.

Thanks Ron. Buicks are great cars, no matter what year. Thankfully they have not gone the way of Olds, Plymouth, Pontiac and Mercury. Apparently the old slogan "When Better Automobiles are Built, Buick Will Build Them" still applies and hopefully they will be around for ever....

Wow! I'm glad someone brought this back up to the top, I hadn't seen it yet. Love the buicks!!! (I am a late 30s/40s/early 50s GM guy myself) Love that barn too! I need to replace my crappy metal shed and I think I'll be building a wooden one while stealing a few of the ideas that have made your barn so great. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks man, let me know if I can help with more pictures or anything.
I remember when my dad traded our 48 Buick in on a yellow with green top 54 Chevy Bel Air. He always wanted the old Buick back. My first car was a 57 Chevy, followed by a 67 Chevelle then a Willys M38-USMC issue. First car after getting out of the ****, a 1954 Buick, had one ever since.

Showboy, you need a Buick in your signature. The 54 Packards were nice though.

Yes, I do ---- so feel free to donate one to my cause. :D Something like this one would do nicely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Skylark-Wiki-Side-View-D.jpg -- or -- http://carsnewsblog.com/gallery/2485551-buick-wildcat.html

I like Buicks -- new and old -- very much. I wouldn't know where to start. There have been many incarnations of the Riviera (including the boattail) that would have my interest. I'd also like to see a Grand National in my garage. I even like the 2014s -- though I don't think that they are going far enough with them. There's a lot that they could do with that new Regal.

You own the holy grail of Buicks ---- IMHO. Nice. The Buicks of the 50s and 60s were really sweet.

Ran across these pictures taken last fall of when I was pouring a floor in a pole barn I built about 15 years ago to store hay in for my goats. It is 28X42 and has about 3 1/2 ft of fall from one end to the other which didn't matter when storing hay but not too conducive to storing and working on cars. I split the difference in elevation into 3 tiers and built retaining walls out of railroad cross ties. I moved about two tandem truck loads of good red clay in with my Ford 2000 and scoop and rolled it with the tractor and loaded scoop about every 2-3 inches. I love the way Georgia red clay with optimum moisture compacts. I seriously considered mixing a little cement into the clay and using that as finish floor. But I poured between 3-4 inches of 3000 psi and finished it off to a smooth sidewalk finish. I had thought one time to enclose this and make it my main shop but changed my mind and am beginning the build of a 40x40x12 for that.

You should be very proud of yourself BF, that barn is a thing of beauty in a beautiful setting surrounded by beautiful things (the Buicks).

The pictures in post #40 look like they belong on postcards & the last one in post #95 would be right at home on a calendar (BTW, is that your house in the background?).

Thanks for the nice comment Mark. Yea, that is our house in the background. Built back in 87-88, I drew it up on graph paper and my wife and I did about 40% of the work on it. Back then the insurance companies would not allow tin roofs so for 24 years it had a green shingle roof on it. 2 years ago we finally got our tin roof. I installed the wiring for the lightning rods before the tin was laid leaving pig tails and the roofers installed the actual rods. I also installed the half moon gutters before the tin roof was installed.
