We are getting ready to buy a new garage door for our attached garage and am having trouble getting the door and window combination we want.

Long Recessed Ranch Panels (not raised panels)

At the link you can see my window options:

We like the "3 Pane" or "6 Pane" that they have in the carriage house series.

The "Colonial" in the Ranch Series is too busy, so I am thinking of buying it "Plain" and making my own lites to adhere to the glass. Some sort of thin plastic material, which would be glued to the glass?

Anyone ever attempted this....or have any thoughts about how to go about it?

I have looked around at other manufactures (CHI, Ideal, Amarr), but did not find anything with that look. CHI offeres something but they wanted an extra $400 for the long recessed panel.

Thanks
Matt

Have you asked them about interchangeability from the one series to the other AFA the top panel? I would think that would be the 1st option.

I have made and installed many glue on muntins. I used wood and then found a vinyl extrusion (I don't think it's made anymore) but it came in white only. There are a few kits like this: https://www.newpanes.com/index.html

Really lots of options. Normally you would use silicone to attach but 3M makes some adhesive tape that does well. It's very much like the strip adhesives used on auto body moldings.

I asked about mix and matching them, but the stiles would not line up. Each panel would have 3 stiles, each 3" wide. But the window stiles would be 3", 4", 3".

Why not just get a carriage door, and then get the windows you want? Cost?

If that's not an option, stick with the door you have and go with the "plain" window option and then make your own muntin to give it the desired 3 or 6 pane look you seek.

The Carriage Door just doesn't have the same look as the ranch recessed panel. I love carriage doors but they would not look right on our house which is a 50's ranch.

Even though it is not shown on their website, I BELIEVE according to my book that National Door out of Texas makes (or made at one time) the window insert you are looking for for the 670/770 series doors. It is the Stockbridge (3 pane) style insert. You won't be able to get them from National directly though. They pretty much deal with manufacturers and dealers. My book is older, but I believe the insert you are looking for does exist though.

You may also be able to ask if they can put the carriage windows in your ranch panel section. Crossing over window options is possible in some cases.
