Building 30x40 garage. Garage Door framing question.

My question is how are people framing the garage doors when there is concrete at the bottom, I want to avoid rot issues down the road. Should I use green treat on the bottom 4 feet and cover it with steel?


Opinions are appreciated.

Mine is pressure treated where it abuts the lower (concrete) wall, and no issues. It's to code where I live.

here I have to use pt as well anywhere it touches concrete. with proper overhang or gutters and no splash landscaping it will be fine for quite awhile. You can use pvc material if you're overly concerned but you'll pay for it.

The entire side jamb on my doors is pressure treated.

My foundation is similar to your. I installed the jambs that stop 1/2 above the concrete pad, and had the sheathing extend over the jamb as well to help tie it in and leave a flush face.

You can use regular trim, just need a barrier between it and the concrete. I usually stick fortiflash to the back of the trim. Any vapor barrier will work really.

I'd rather do that than have a chunk of treated lumber for trim.

The biggest problem with using PT as "trim" is keeping it painted. Wrapping/capping it with aluminum would eliminate the paint problem- but that's getting pretty expensive for just a garage door opening trim.

I'd just use regular 2X and a vapor barrier between it and the concrete block. Or, as previously mentioned-PVC.

For good or bad I didn't let any wood touch the ground. I placed a piece of 1x4 Azek trim to provide a "face" on the exterior of the building. Then, over top of that, and the rest of it is skinned with trim coil that I bent. I had to do some careful relieving of the concrete with a rub brick where it didn't fit the aluminum exactly. The garage door gasket material sits on top of the aluminum with color-head screws to pierce the aluminum and stick in the wood. I had one problem at the bottom where I needed to drive a screw into the concrete wall. There, I have to go back and put in a molly to give the screw something to bite into.
