I keep planning to get an open carport built for my truck. I was going to go with a faux-timber frame look using PT 6X6's, but they're stupid expensive right now. What's cheap is round poles. There are several places selling green-treated ones for $2/ft. I'm wondering what would be involved in using them for my carport? I know I'd have to notch them where they join together. How do I join them together? Bolts? lags? Brackets or strapping? I want an old-time rustic look, which is why I don't just throw up one of the cheap tin carports everybody else around here has.
I don't want to put the poles in the ground. I'm going to pour concrete spot footings with a galvanized bracket embedded to hold the poles above grade.
