In the process of purchasing a house (and garage), and trying to plan out upgrades if it becomes mine. One of the things I want to do in the garage is somehow add a ceiling, lighting, and insulation. Since you guys are must more well versed in this kind of thing than me, looking for ideas. How would you go about adding a ceiling? dimensions are 33x24x14(i think)'. Yes, there are parts of the roof that need fixed as well. Ignore all the junk, its not mine

Nice high ceilings, at that point if I were you I would probably just do open cell spray foam and just enjoy the height in there. (As opposed to framing it down for some drywall or liner panels.) Just my $0.02

That roof looks "barely there" if you ask me. The roof framing timbers span the full 24' dimension?

I would consider tearing off the complete roof and replacing with trusses, which would be engineered for a bottom chord, place 24" on center and you have a new long lasting (~30yr) roof plus an easy way to hang the ceiling.

Imo a concrete building with an R value of 1 is going to be a cold one. (Its probably slightly higher because of the presumed air pockets in the blocks) Might also work on some wall insulation as well but it would need a covering.

I also saw that. Almost liiked like an optical illusion. Your gabel walls are now load bearing. Considering there concrete block thats prob just fine but i dont know much about this style of building to tell you if its strong enough.

Also with the huge block walls that you have insulating the ceiling will do next to nothing if you dont insulate the walls. I hate block walls.

That is some of the strangest roof framing I've ever seen. I agree with matt_i, I'd rip off the entire roof and replace with properly designed trusses. You could even change the pitch or design at that point. Hard to believe it's held up to snow loads over the years, although I've seen a number of other structures that left me wondering that same thing.

I didn't really pay that close attention to the how the rafters were placed at first....

matt_im Bretny & manwithtools that roof is messed up. I wonder how long has it been like that? It must droop big time after a heavy snowfall.

If you do consider buying that and you get an inspection done, it would be interesting to learn what the inspector says about that roof.

Lighting is the least of your problems with that after closer look.

building has been stand since 1991 to my knowledge. New shingles in 2017. I will be building a much larger pole building in time, but would still like to use this one for now and for storage in the future

I can't see 100% of it but it looks like the door would be really close to the underside of the ceiling.....iow, its very close to the top row of bricks.

That could also influence the decision because its so wide, it could block the installation of lighting/ceiling fans if it were closer than say 8" to the intended plane of the ceiling.

id take advantage of high ceiling and enjoy the commercial look to it...maybe brighten it up with some paint and new fixtures and spray underside of roof for r value

I think that's the best plan. Then eventually rebuild the roof or tear down and build bigger

4 rows of block above the door. But the header sections is poured concrete, not block

it is odd framing indeed, but before I started ripping things down, I
d hire an engineer to inspect & document . it may be fine, it may need work. but once you know it needs work, ( if it does) you know .
if it infact does need strengthening, probably could do it from inside with some rafters .
do I see daylight peaking thru the gable end?
once you sort out that you can proceed on how to insulate my $0.02

I've never seen rafters run that way. Would like to see a picture that shows the entire under side of the roof. Is there a load bearing wall in the center or something we can't see? Are the rafters 2x4 or 2x6? How much snowfall can you expect to see? If the roof is inadequate and you spray foam insulation on it - you will be adding weight and expending money that will be wasted if you have to redo the roof.

I'd be in for more pictures but I think there is a steel truss spanning the middle of the building. Those horizontal boards are purlins and would span 12' not the full 24'.
