Building a climbing wall for the grand kids

I gotta start out saying I debated heavily on the title as I thought "Cam plays with wood too" might go sideways immediately....:headscrat

Now getting back on track I normally only share metal Fab projects. And as a matter of fact I rarely ever do anything more then framing and trim work over the last couple decades. Recently my daughter hit me up for a simple mantel and matching cap for the TV surround. But more importantly a climbing wall for the grand babies. Well needles to say if it's for them, I'll get right on it and make something cool.

So we picked up a 24 piece assorted rock kit and I went to town making a backboard that is somewhat modular for mounting. In looking at the pieces they all offered a unique shape depending on how they're mounted so I wanted to take full advantage of that aspect. I also wanted to be able to change it up without having to remove it from the wall.

Here you have you're basic 4x8 sheet of birch plywood that's fully boxed. And because it'll be painted just went with preprimed composite trim. Everything is glued and nailed except for the cleat to the board, that's glued and screwed so the weight is hung from the board its self and not the perimeter framing. I decided to use the French cleat method so I cut those two pieces off one end. Fortunately the play room in my daughters house has one ten foot tall wall but I didn't want to make this exactly 8ft tall in the event they decide to move it at some point.

One of my major concerns were splinters. I recessed the backboard 1/4" in from the face of the framing. And because I'm lazy and didn't feel like mortising the framing just used some bar stock to gauge it with. Hopefully the pictures explain it better.

Once that was done it was time to layout the holes. Thankfully our buddy duker was there for me in suggesting the right drill bit (Brad bit) to use so I didn't make a flipping mess out it it.

Thanks brother

The OCD in me just can't live with anything less then dead on, wood or no wood. So I took a scrap piece of aluminum figure out a horizontal, vertical and diagonal pattern that'll allow these to be installed any which way.

Once all the holes were drilled it was time for a little deburring and lacking much in the way of fine wood working tools whipped out some porting stuff and went to town.

Now here's where this simple little project gets cuul IMHO. My BIL owns a wrap company. So I reached out to him to print this for me to use as the insert. :bounce:

And since I mentioned the other two pieces here they are. At this point I'm just waiting on her to decide what color paint and I'll finish everything. I also have an order in for the extra threaded inserts so I can fill all the holes. This way it'll be super easy to change the orientation of the hand holds.

This is where I'm at for now. I imagine I'll have this all wrapped up by the end of next week and I'll get some more pictures. However the rock wall won't be installed until late Christmas Eve so the finished project is a few days away.

Thanks for looking

Hope she is getting some thick foam for around it. Eight feet is a long way to fall backwards. And we all know they are going to be hanging upside down on it after they master the up and down. I can see phase two coming

Ya it's getting either a foam pit or memory foam mattress for sure.

Cam, glad I could help. The jig layout was a great idea, I have tossed that one into the memory bank as I might have to construct something similar one Day!

The ones around here have a two foot thick foam like gymnasts use. A mattress is too firm. Sounds like a good time

Duke with your imagination and talents I have no doubt you'll make your own version of Disney land. :bounce:

And thanks again. That style bit was a total win, I only pulled one one chunk out of all those holes. And the other reason I went for a symmetrical lay out was if the inserts turn out to be an issue I can machine some 3/8" aluminum backing plate that screw on to the backside. Hopefully I don't need to do that, I'm not looking forwards to cutting that much plate nor tapping a ~hundred holes.

Heck when I was a kid we had real rocks to climb on and cactus to land in if you screwed the pooch. It didn't take but a couple of slips to learn to get good at it. :wtf:

There's another option for a soft landing that I might go with. They already have one of those plastic ball play things with hundreds of balls. I might build a foam container and get a few more hundred to fill it with. Two toys in one.

Very cool! I'd love to see more pictures if you do end up getting it wrapped. Nice work!!

Oh absolutely I'll be showing that off. Hopefully the BIL doesn't flake on me. If I don't have it by the middle of next week I'll find a local joint to plot it for me. I think it's just too cool not to do.

Thanks for following along guys.

Cam, cool project! My kids would **** themselves to play on that. We go to a place with climbing walls and they play so hard they fall asleep within minutes of leaving. I think the wrap will set it over the top!

Nice! What are these dead tree material you are working with !! Haha

Ya man this wood stuff is crazy. I thought grinding metal made a mess but it don't hold a candle against this saw dust stuff. :headscrat

Thanks OT. The BIL called yesterday and the pic I provided didn't have enough resolution to do it justice according to him. So he picked out a couple others and wanted to run them by me but I told him to just surprise us instead. Looks like we'll be wrapping this up by Sunday.....I hope.

Interesting. Some people their grandchildren are making them climb the walls. You have turned the tables on them

But you can blow it out into the driveway without fear of it leaving rust stains. I too typically work in steel. When I do wood working projects I feel like I am cheating. It is so easy to cut and move around. Clean up is a leaf blower.

Not taking anything away from guys that build furniture and what not. That is way ahead of my skill set. I tend to smack the wood with a large hammer and leave big dents. Wife still isn't happy about the dining room table. That's a different story.

Right - right

Definitely wood is a much easier clean up, no doubt about it.

So a bit more progress today. My BIL called a couple nights ago wanting to come out this morning to do the pic install. The kids happened to be getting the inside of their house painted this weekend. So I asked them yesterday morning if they could get the painter to do up the frame. Apparently that didnt work in his schedule but no one told me till late last night. So the sperm donor said he'd take care or it so it would be dry for today.

Big mistake, I'll leave it at that

But at least it got painted. And I got all the holes filled with inserts. So just to cover the future made sure each one had a lite coating of anti seize and I also hit each of them with a couple dabs of silicon so they hopefully don't come loose.

The painters will be done today so I'll head over in the morning and finish the install.

That's a cool idea. It took me all the way to the last pic you put up to get my head around the design.

Thanks brother and this should seal the deal on it.

My BIL went all in on this, the detail is amazing

And this is how I spent the morning of Christmas Eve, installing and caulking in the mantel and top piece for the tv thingy plus installing the wall. We didn't put the rocks on until around 11 last night and my daughter is just waiting for the kids to wake up.

Hi, that climbing wall looks great with that wrap installed, that was a really good idea to do that. Nice job on the other items too. Hope you have a great New Year!

Hi LXCam

Both projects look terrific, great job. That climbing wall has given me an idea to do something similar for my granddaughter.

Thanks guys, the wall was a fun project. And my daughter is stoked about the mantle. Still hates the brick though :p
