I would make sure the floor plan is accessible or can easily be made so (I'm talking about ADA accessible). You never know what the future will bring. If you live into the home through retirement, or an accident befalls someone, you will appreciate it. Make sure a master suite is on the ground floor as well.

Sorry that you had a problem but that doesn't happen to everybody if they do their homework. I've had the same builder build me 2 houses and after 10 years he did an expansion and remodel and later this year will be building another house for me.

Trust me I did my homework and still got screwed.

Of course I did. Problem was he was using new clients deposits to complete under construction homes and when the money dried up the rest of us were left holding the bag.
