Building a metal garage and need some input

So we’ve been trying to put up a metal building for a few months now. Good bit of the time has been spent going over yard placement, size of building., etc…etc… the wife wants one thing and I want something else. One thing that is holding us up is I can’t get a clear answer on the whole 811 dig thing.

I know we have to call them and I knew we need permits.

I keep getting told different things. I spoke with a grading company about my septic and electric lines. I also spoke with a few concrete companies.

I know where the electric lines are at. I know where my septic tank is. The issue is the drain field. I contacted environmental health and got the drawing from them. The drawing is not to scale doesn’t have any clear measurements to go off of. It also doesn’t have the new house in the drawing: We had a house fire in 2017 and when they built the new home they tied into the existing septic system to save on building cost but the septic people said there was no need to update the drawing as it didn’t change.

Even though I know where my septic tank is. I have no clue where the drain field is only an approx area but I can’t go off the grass color as the whole property on that side of the yard is all green .

I called 811 they said that I’m not suppose to call to setup a dig ticket that the person doing the work does this. They also said they don’t typically locate septic systems and I get circled back to environmental health who has not helped much with them explaining my issue.

I then get told the opposite by the people im looking to hire.

I can’t commit to have any work done until I know how I want the building. I can’t fully know how I want the building until I know where it has to sit to avoid the septic system.

I called a most of the septic companies in my area to get them to come mark the location of everything but the ones I’ve contacted said we only drain your system or install new ones we don’t do that contact environmental health.

Sort of feel stuck at this point. It’s usually the money that holds me up but at this point it’s simply lack of knowledge and not understanding what needs to be done.

How about contacting the company that installed it originally? Assuming they're still in business.
If you know the general area of the field can you use a rod to push in the ground to find the drain pipe outline?

Edit: Neglected to ask, does your wife want the building larger than you do? Listen to your wife (which I didn't).

I had a septic inspection company do a thorough inspection before I bought this house recently. They marked it out and did GPS mapping.

They do not service septic systems only do the inspections. They also do wells.

How old is your septic system? It's going to vary a lot, but here septic is one of the very few things that is highly regulated. Septic requires a permit (and an engineer) so the county has records which include the original design of that septic system.

If the county doesn't have them, then I'd see if I could figure out who installed it and ask them.

And if the septic is "really old" there won't be any records... We've got one of those too. You have to have it surveyed, which is a pain in the ***, but doable.

No she wants it smaller but she’s not gonna win that one she got all the say in regards to how the house was done this is my space 😂.

The original home that had burned down was actually built by her great uncle including the septic install and he passed a long time ago unfortunately.

We think her relative who built the house did the work. We tried asking that info as well when we called environmental health. I’m guessing at the time things were not documented as much or required so much regulation.

Would I just google septic survey or land survey?

Definitely not land survey. You think they get their hands dirty in the modern GPS days? :)

Here, you want a company that does septic inspections or septic repair. I think both would be able to figure out where things are with a bit of digging.

We live in a small town and honestly got lucky. A few months after my last post my wife and I were talking about the situation with a friend and they referred us to someone they knew that did septic work that was an older gentleman in town.

We got to talking on the phone and explained the situation and he actually knew the original owner and had done some septic work for him in the past and knew exactly where everything was and came out and marked it out for us. Super nice guy and didn’t even charge us anything for it despite me offering multiple times.
