Building a new slide hammer attachment - where to get threaded adapter?

I'm sure I'm not the first one to come up with the idea, but essentially I'm hooking up a pair of 10" Vise Grips to my OTC slide puller. I can get an adapter from OTC or Snap-on from around $20-30, but I was trying to see how economically I could do this, and probably make a few more for different pairs of Vise Grips.

The adapter in question is OTC 8002: 7/16-14 (Vise-Grips) to 5/8-18 (puller).
I'm using threaded rod vs welding so that both tools can be returned to their original state when I'm done...I was considering TIG welding a few nuts of both sizes together but I don't want to make it half a$$ed.

Thanks!

I welded the screw attachment to the vise grips, comes with the body shop slide hammer not the puller slide hammer, because I didnt use it. but I think tig welding a few nuts together would work ok.

Farmall, why don't you try and make something like this:
http://www.morganmfg.com/ab_cat04.htm
This way you can use this one adapter for any vice grip from 7" to 10" without having to change the screws.
Just make it to fit the shaft on your slide puller or buy this adapter and bush it down to the size you need. I have the adapter and it has come in very handy many times.

That's an incredibly good idea, if only I had a mill/my machining teacher from last year hadn't retired...could have knurled it and all! Thanks for the good idea

There is a guy on EBay that makes this exact thing in three styles for the three different Vise-Grip sizes. The name of his company is TOOLCO. I bought all three and I really like them. I actually had him make me a special for a Kent-Moore seal puller which he did for a very reasonable price. Good person.

You can buy the adapter and bush it down to the diameter of your slide hammer. This way, one adapter could be used for many different sets of vice grips.

Some of the better hardware stores sell replacement adjuster bolts for vise-grips. Get the longer 5/8x 18 tpi nuts used for truck and trailer Ubolts. Weld the nut to the head of the bolt. The U bolt nuts work really well since they aren't plated, be sure to use a jam nut so you don't jack the threads..

My OTC slide hammer came with the attachment for vice grips. It works nice for stubborn cotter pins.

That was one of my plans, if necessary! And keys, tired of hitting fingers, etc.

You're correct, my mistake. I'll find the one I have and post a link.
Edit, here it is. At $20 I would still buy rather than fabricate. Time is money.

That's decent, but I like the fact I can make it as long or as short as I want my way. Might still get it though, but the hole point of this was using material on hand.

You should be able to find a nut and bolt that you could weld together

I found an end from a pile of misc. fittings I inherited from my dad. I believe original use is for hydraulic hose. It has the threaded end you need and lots of material to cut and weld at the other end. I made my own slide hammer and used this piece as part of a custom axle puller.

The threaded rod I found in a metal waste dumpster, the wieght was salvaged from a asphalt repair tamper.

I have some cheap chinese vise grips that the adjustment bolt was loose, so I welded a nut to the end of the grips so I could use a longer bolt, then welded a coupling nut on the end with a washer. works well and was free...for the small vice grips I weld a 1/2-20 nut to the end and replace the adjustment screws with better screws as well.

For my. 5/8-18 threaded puller I bought a few coupling nuts they are about 2 inches long , fully threaded, Works great cause anything you can weld to you can pull on.

That's the original plan, albeit permanently to some rod. I'll update this when I finish up.
