I am building a 12'x31' deck in Dallas, Texas. My questions are about the metal roof structure fabrication. What material would you use? Aluminum, steel? I'd like to keep it as light weight as possible, but the material needs to span at least 19' between metal posts at one point. Would you use c-channel, I beams, and how thick? This is my first patio build so just looking for some advice as I plan my roof structure.

A lot of assumptions, like one 31' edge is supported by a building and posts on opposite parallel edge, but I think I'd go looking for a truss of some sort for the 19' span - and maybe continue for full 31'. Might look at salvage places. I just like the openness. Then 12'+ rafters at posts and mid 19' span, purlins on edge over or framed into rafters, and metal roofing. Basic post frame construction.

I suppose you could do an lvl in place of truss, rafters 2' on center, sheathing, and shingles if you have enough pitch. Or spread rafters and go with 2x6 t&g deck - nice looking underside.

If the OP is wanting it for just shade, there are many shade types of products available.

Many are just robust type of tarp material, that is stretched and mounted by steel cable.

Others are similar to an awning on an RV that mounts on the house and sort of rolls out. Many of these even have wind sensors that will wind them up if so much wind is present.

Really depends on what you need the roof for and the weather conditions that are common in the area.
