Hey guys, has anyone built, or had a metal building built lately? My buddy is having one built, already had everything delivered, and they came out yesterday to dig the holes. Anyway, the holes failed inspection. Inspector said the holes have to be 60" deep, 22" across, with 12" footer with rebar at bottom, and then 24" of concrete around 6x6 on top of that!!!!!! All I can say is wow! Just wondering I anyone has dealt with this. A lot of pole barns aren't even in concrete. The builder wasn't going to go near that deep, or near that big around, and wasn't going to use concrete. Also, the 14" 6x6's won't work now. Also said post have to be no more than 8' apart when they were planning on 10', so now there are quite a few issues! Just wonder if anyone else has had any of these issues. It's a 30x40x10 Fyi. Thanks a lot!

I would say the building contractor should have known what the codes were? When I had my garage built the inspectors didn't come. My builder told me that the inspectors rarely come if the know the builder.

Sometimes the hole sizing is not about holding the building up but holding it down in a high wind situation.

The buggers made doing it right a requirement for passing inspection. What will they think of next?

Codes, inspections etc are end result of all the things that didn't go right. Codes are continually reviewed and upgraded. This one is probably required based on the new research on Zombie attack. You can never be too cautious around Zombies.

Whatever the reason, The contractor should have known this.

I am in the process of finishing up a pole barn (30x40x10) in Jefferson Co., KY and the regs for holes were 48in deep and 24in diameter. We then filled the first 6in with concrete. The inspector passed us before and after concrete. On our 6x6's we just nailed two 12in pieces of 2x6's at the bottom as uplift cleats and she was OK with that too.

Which county are you in?

Spencer county. And there are a lot of pole barns out here with zero concrete. I'm thinking this is an updated code regulation. Nothing out here but fields and creeks! Lol

Jefferson got incorporated into Louisville Metro so we had a whole new host of regulations to follow after the merger. The only thing that has really bothered me is Louisville will no longer issue us agricultural burn permits. They want us to use recreational burn permits. On recreational you can't burn "brush", the fire cannot exceed 5ft diameter and can only be lit for three hours.

I've been finished with my building 30x48x12 for over a month now, final inspection passed. My post holes had to be 22" wide and 52" deep, post had to set on a concrete cookie, they also put 2x6 at bottom of post for uplift protection. Sometimes I think it might be the way the permit writer interprets the code (The whole state of KY is under the same building code, doesnt matter what county you are in) its another thing if its enforced or not? When I took my building permit out, I had to have MSD sign off, the health dept before they would issue my bldg permit. I did learn quite alot about the building code requirements and I am glad my PB was built to these requirements, I watched the whole thing go together and I dont think its going anywhere. Now I'm trying to get the power company to hook my electric up, I'm on the list I guess. I have a copy of the residential building codes for the pole barns if you need it. I dont think I am very far from you either, close to TV Rd and the Freeway. Good Luck, its definately worth it, mine is almost completely finished.

I am in Daviess Co. Ky and just built a pole barn and will be building another to house our camper. Our builders only had to go 48 on the depth, no footer or cake but did go 2ft in diameter on the holes. Lee(the builder) said they don't have to use concrete but, they prefer to use it on each pole for theyre business standards. They also said the rodent guard on the bottom isn't code or necessary but they install it anyway. They still beat everyone around here pricewise and have better quality. It only took them three days to complete except for the concrete guy to comeback and kerf the floor

I'm in Lawrence county but I built my 30'X50' back in '01, I didn't have any problems getting everything done. But I'm sure things have changed greatly since we have gotten a change of weather patterns in the last few years.
