No, I've never considered using an old appliance or HVAC compressor. Neat idea though, I'll have to remember it for the future.

Yes, people use what you are saying. I have only personally witnessed 1 person using an old compressor as a vacuum pump. I was called because he thought he did not have adequate vacuum. His problem was that it would not pull down to 30. As I recall it only went down in to the low 20's. I never saw it but he told me later that he put 2 compressors in series and got down low enough.
Maybe his first compressor was not in great shape. I don't know. If you are going to do refrigeration work make sure you can pull and hold a good vacuum.

I do vacuum bag clamping doing woodworking and use an old dehumidifier pump. All that you need to do is hook up a tube to the sucking side of the pump and wire it up to an extension chord and **** away. I also made up a fluid extraction hook up for it. It consists of a old metal gas can with an input and output fitting. Turn on vac and the fluid fills up in the gas can and does not make it to the pump (as long as you dont let the gas can get overfilled). Easy to drain antifreeze, oil, tranyfluid, etc. and also makes a good vac brake bleeder.

I was just going to mention the vacuum bag clamping route. Doesn't the refrigerant lubricate the pump in these things? That had been my impression. ALthough, for low cost you can likely replace the pump every so often when you destroy it.

There is still plenty of lube in the pump unless you tip it upside down and drain it out. Have used them for years on and off no problems. And as you say if it does die there usually always someone throwing out an old appliance.

Ok, I give. I'm using an AC compressor for OBA on my Wrangler and I can figure out what the washing machine motor is for, but I'm clueless what the truck tire is for.
