Building a Table for a BGE

I'm working on building a simple table for a Big Green Egg. I have my plan that I'm copying but the change I want to make is a set of casters that will make it so I can roll it out of the garage and onto a gravel driveway, and of course back into the garage when through using it. The garage has maybe a 1" lip. I would like to avoid pneumatic tires as this over time will be sure to create a headache. Any ideas?

My "egg" is mounted in a heavy granite topped table with good quality 4" solid urethane casters. It rolls fine around my patio, but it weighs a ton! I think your going to have issues rolling on gravel unless you get some wide pneumatic wheels for that cart.

Nice table!

The pneumatic wheels are what I'm afraid of. I plan on putting this at our cabin up north so it will probably only get used a few times a year and I don't want to leave it outside when we aren't there. I'm pretty sure it would walk off.

Would foam filled wheel barrow tires work? I think they fit a 1/2 to 3/4 inch axle depending on tire size. Harbor freight, tractor supply, etc should have them.

I made a cart for my upright smoker. I made it from 1/2" black pipe that I bent and welded. Not as pretty as what you're proposing, but it works. In my case, I put an axle almost right under the smoker with 8" wheels, and then just pick up the table end with built-in handles, and roll it around like a wheelbarrow. I hate casters; if they all swivel, the dumb thing always wants to take off sideways just as you're wheeling it past the car (like my gas grille does!).

I have fabricated several bulky and heavy items on my patio and yard that are on casters, including a BGE cart. I don't have gravel anywhere, but I use 4"-6" solid or foam tires on every one of them. Pneumatic tires are nice, but we all know they eventually crack, leak, etc. and you'll end up repairing or replacing them.

really depends how many times you will be moving this thing. if its going to be in garage for 363 days a year i'd use hard rubber wheels and just roll it out on a piece of wood.
if its out for display a lot more then that I like the wheelbarrel tire idea. maybe the ones for a hand dolly would look better. but they don't give them away. like 30 bucks a piece.

Mine is super heavy due to the 2" concrete top as well as the egg weighing quite a bit. I have the medium grade HF (4" I think) casters. IIRC they are rated for something like 750 lbs each, so they carry the load no problem. I have very carefully taken it over concrete slab lips as shown in the pic.

If this is something you plan on doing regularly, I would go bigger and maybe something pneumatic or something with more sidewall give. I would also fab up some cups the casters are mounted to that your table legs slide into due to the extra side loading they will see when hitting the lip. If not, over time I see the caster fasteners getting ripped out from that moment created at the caster base.

I would go with the wheelbarrow tires at one end and handles that slip into tubes along the inside edge of the top supports at the other.

Or the handicap grab rail as a handle bar is a good idea.
If you go with I would suggest through bolts with large washers over screws.

Nice job. Smart to add the extra space around the middle. That area does get a little warm.

Do you plan to add a handle on the heavy side to help pull on and off the drive or is there one and I can't see?

Nice.

I hope to do similiar one day to my Weber 22.5" OTS and turn it into a poor man's Performer grill.

Also raising the cooking surface up about 6-8" would be sweet.

Have you considered something like a bicycle wheel and use two. Put two on and a handle at the opposite end. Pick up the handle and wheel it like a wheel barrow. The ones linked above are flat free tires. The larger diameters will roll on the rougher ground.

On edit; look at some street vendor carts for big wheel inspiration;

Dude, that's freakin' badass!!!!!

Thanks!

The BGE is sitting on stands, wheels still on. I just disconnect the heim joint stabilizers and remove a few threaded knobs in the stands and the BGE comes off on and roll around on factory wheels.

The top cutting tray is removable, 120K BTU side burner, and 115 VAC power is provided through a retractable reel under the burner area and exits out the back to plug in.

Cutting tools, thermos, etc. are stored iin t the tool chest drawers, umbrella stand mounted on the back.. works for me!
