Hey Guys what do you think? A friend of mine gave me the pump and motor off his compressor which he had dismantled awhile ago to use the tank for something. He forgets the name of the compressor but remembers it was 120 volt.
The motor ia a A.O Smith s#k56a46b23, 240 volt, 23.5 amps 3450 rpm, type K,and there is a 12/3,black,white and green wire coming off the motor. The pump has a sticker on it that says Lot # 09384, 1999, Model# 59n0060kx0919.
I'm researching on the net to find out what I really got here and found these pics. My pump and motor look identical. I'm looking at the wiring,If it was 120 volt, wouldn't that mean it drew 47 amps?Isnt that 12/3 wire to small then?I want to wire it for 240.Now look at the pics below and notice how its wired, doesnt the wire feeding the switch look to small?
I'm putting the pump and motor on top of my 60 gollon vertical tank. Taking off the old 3hp single stagepump and motor.
I'm planning on a 30 amp breaker, 10 gauge thhn in emt,I would like to put a switch or disconnect where it wiring will go outside, the compressor will be enclosed out behind my shop.

If the motor says 240 volt on the data tag, then..............................................

Ta Da!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its 240 volt.

If its dual voltage (which I doubt) it will be marked on the data tag with both ratings and amperages.

Not trying to be a smart *** here, but I think the specs answer the question for you. If this is a good pump and motor, why is the guy getting rid of it? Sounds like a 5 hp motor from the amperage, is the pump two stage?

I did not know that the motor had to state it was dual voltage, I thought you popped off the end cover and in where the wires were there might be a schematic for changing the winding wiring.
My friend took a perfectly good compressor apart because the job he was working on needed and extra storage tank for air, they were installing an automatic car wash in a bus repair shop,so this was sitting there not being used.
It looks like a 5hp motor to me to. I have no idea about the pump, thats why the pictures, same # and looks identical, so by the specs on the compressor in the picture I think its a two stage.

A quick way to determine if you have a single stage or 2 stage pump is to look at the cylinders. A single stage pump will have equal size cylinders, on a 2 stage pump one cylinder will be smaller than the other.
As Charles mentioned, the motor would have both voltages shown on the nameplate, as well as 2 amp ratings if it were dual voltage. Sounds like yours is 240 only. Your amperage is about average for a 5 hp motor turning 3450 rpm.
