Now that my garage is built it is time to remove my 16' x 24' wooden shed from my property. The shed is still standing, but has many rotten section, a roof that leaks, and a wooden foundation that is rotten. It is beyond fixing.......

So any experience here in the best way to demolition a building?

I do have a Farmall H with a loader.

It is best to try and cut it up into section to load onto a trailer or am I better pushing it over/down then piecing it up to carry sizes?

The power has been pulled at the breaker in the house and it has not other services.

Probably easier to push it over and then tear it apart on the ground.

Or push it over and burn it if that's allowed in your area.

Every thing I've ever seen gets demolished then picked up. It can't fall on you if it's already on the ground...that's what I'd do.

Go to Home Depot and buy a couple of sledge hammers and two large crowbars.

Go to the store and buy 2 cases of cold beer, 5 lbs of hamburger meat, buns, chips and salsa

Call some buddies...tell them beer and food is on you.

Shed will be done in no time.....

Use the loader to knock it down. Agree with the beer and food. Buddies as well. Burn it..

Start erly in morning. Burn first, once it's collapsed, push towards center of burn with loader. By nitefall you will have a nice small campfire and no mess. Next to no work. Include beer and burgers of course.

Hit the corners with the bucket. Then push down on the top with bucket and down it will come.

Like others have said it can't fall on your head if it's on the ground.

If it's old, faded wood. Then you take it down carefully and resell the barnwood. Can get several dollars a board foot around here. Beams even more ($4-5 oak)

I have taken down a couple old garages similar to yours. My advice is to remove the siding ( and sheathing if present, a piece of cake if we're talking bare studs on the inside)

Before you get to the point where the building is unstable, temporarily brace it. When doors, windows, and siding is off- you can push it over whichever direction you'd like and cut up the roof with a sawzall.

It takes a bit longer doing it this way, but it is neat and controlled, and allows lots of material to be salvaged. Cleanup is a breeze, and if you are haling it off to the dump, you will cut the number of trips way down as you can neatly stack the pieces on your trailer.

Burning isn't an option. My powerline to the house runs over top!

Thanks, that makes sense.

Yes I am hauling it to the dump on my 18 ft car hauler.

This is basically what I did why the old garage. Once I took out the window, off came some siding and cutting of the roof to free it from the house. More siding was removed then selectively taking wall studs out. Once it was down, I cut the roof up in sections and hauled it on my 16' car trailer to the landfill.

Jack it up and put it on cribbing so a lo-boy can get under it. Advertise it for sale to be moved. A shed that big's gotta be worth something up there to someone. You'd be amazed what can be fixed up when money's tight.

I am trying to give it away locally and I have a couple of guys interested, but so far no takers.

I am not in a depressed area for money and have probably had 10-12 $50,000 - $100,000 garages go up with 5 blocks of me in the last year.

Free still means time!

After removing the siding, could you get the loader bucket inside to lift the roof up? You could probably pry the walls off the bottom of the roof with a crowbar. Then set the roof in the trailer for your next run to the dump. (maybe cut it in half first)

I second his statement.

I've demo'd a few buildings now (house, sheds, basements). It may be fun and seem easy to go at it with a tractor but you get left with huge chunks that are hard to handle.

Take your time and take it down one layer at a time and it will be a lot more manageable to take it to the dump. Last demo I stripped the multiple layers of side and sheeting then took it down stick by stick from the top to the bottom. My partner (girlfriend) stayed on the ground and took everything and piled it neatly as I threw it down.

Take a sledgehammer and knock a hole in each corner of the structure. Loop a chain thru it and use the tractor to pull it down one corner at a time.
