Case in point, I needed three (3) 3/8-16 x 1 1/4 socket head cap screws today.

Local Ace gets .95 each

Fastenal wanted $17 for 50, and that's the don't-know-you-from-Adam price.

MSC gets $15.41 for 100 of their import brand, or $18.51 for 100 of their "Made in USA." Take 35% off those prices during fastener frenzy sales and we're at $10.02 and $12.03 respectively.

Soooo.....let's say I wanna go w the Made in USA..........I'm at .12 each vs .95 at Ace. I spend an extra ~$9 and get an extra 97 fasteners over the three I needed. And yes, I'll gladly store the extra 97 and will use them sooner or later.

Shipping is reasonable and generally offset by local sales tax plus I'll lump other stuff I need into my order.

I keep an inventory on hand, which will get larger very soon. A round trip to TSC will cost a gallon of gas and a half hour of my time. I'd rather have some money invested in inventory and have when I need it than need it and not have it.

One of the best things I did a couple years ago was buy about 150 bucks worth of nuts bolts and washers.
I have more 'random' nuts and bolts than most guys who don't run a retail shop, but I never seemed to have what I needed.
I went with E-bay vendor, made a deal off E-bay with him for custom amounts and custom selection. Have NEVER regretted it, not for a second.

I don't always have what I want, sometimes not even close enough to use, but has saved me more than 50 trips to the hardware store in less than two years.

Each of those trips would have cost gas. My closest store is/was 5 miles, next one at 6 miles, next one at 8 miles. Prices are in that order too, the most expensive at the closest, up to the cheapest at 8 miles.
A washer is 20 cents, 16 cents 11 cents. So 90% of the time I drive the 8 miles each way for stuff. Get 60 x 20 vs. 60 x 11 and you can see why.

So 16 miles of driving adds 3.00 bucks gas to even a single washer.
Washers from the bulk buy average 3 cents.

More important, time saved walking over and getting the right thing, rather than searching my trays of bolts/nuts to find one or worse two to ten, that are 'not too different'.

I find myself putting temporary stuff together with the handy bolts, then salvaging them back out. Without a large ready supply of fasteners I would never even try to do that.

They seemed like good prices so I put in a dummy order to see how much shipping would be and they are REAL high on shipping, unless I missed something. $4.20 for the order and $13.32 to ship it is a little pricey to me.

Your shipping and order total:

Subtotal: $4.70
Tax: $0.00
Estimated weight: 0.2 lbs

<table class="ShippingOptionTable" style="border-collapse: collapse;" border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <th scope="col">Shipping Method</th><th scope="col">S+H*</th><th scope="col">Order Total</th> </tr><tr> <td align="left">UPS Ground</td><td align="center">$13.32</td><td align="center">$18.02</td> </tr><tr class="ShippingOptionItemOdd"> <td align="left">UPS 3 Day Select</td><td align="center">$17.52</td><td align="center">$22.22</td> </tr><tr> <td align="left">UPS 2nd Day Air</td><td align="center">$21.94</td><td align="center">$26.64</td> </tr><tr class="ShippingOptionItemOdd"> <td align="left">UPS Next Day Air</td><td align="center">$49.35</td><td align="center">$54.05</td> </tr><tr> <td align="left">UPS Next Day Air with Saturday Delivery</td><td align="center">N/A</td><td align="center">N/A</td> </tr> </tbody></table>
*Our Shipping and Handling is based on regular UPS rates and includes a $1.50 handling charge.Ground shipping is never more than $100 within the continental U.S. [more]

10 years or so ago. I was at Northern Tool with my (now ex) wife. Walked by a 48 hole metal bolt bin and casually mentioned it would be nice to have. D@mn thing showed up 2 weeks later for my birthday. Took $100.00 and bought grade 8 1/4" through 1/2" up to 4" long......nuts, flat and lock washers. One of the best moves of my life. Yeah, I've got grade 8 bolts mounting liscense plates, but it is absolutely wonderful to walk over, reach in and have the item you need without breaking stride. The is tremendous value in not having to stop and run to town.

I've got to agree... I live within a mile of two hardware stores that are open 7 days a week. I still stock a supply of nuts and bolts that I commonly use just so I don't have to stop what I'm doing to go get them. Usually I ask the cashier where the price break is for "bulk" purchases and that's where I buy. That's normally 100 pieces.

I try to keep a supply of bolts of various lengths in sizes from 1/4 to 1/2 inch. They come in SOOO handy when I have to fix something for SWMBFAO.

I snagged this Durham 24 drawer metal cabinet with dividers for $60.00 (new w/small dent) on CL. It supports a lot of hardware!

Thanks to whoever sent me a link to this thread... Yeah, I still have lots of fasteners for sale. I sell mostly on ebay these days, but I am happy to sell to GJ members as well. FYI, my ebay prices are about 70% higher than my direct prices.

As for my own fastener inventory that I have in my garage (not to be confused with the stuff that's for sale), I have 5, 15Wx28Dx52H card file cabinets, plus 36 Durham drawer cabinets (15." wide) full. Sure I don't use it all every day, but I like to be prepared.

These are the card files that I have (bought them at a library demolition sale for $50 a piece)

these are the Durham cabinets I'm referring to:

All that storage, and I'm not even close to having one of everything I have for sale in my personal inventory (mostly what I don't have at home are the machine screws. I have so many different kinds for sale it is mind blowing)... but I'm on the lookout for another dozen or so Durham cabinets so I can catch up).

Yeah, its like a hardware store in there. between all that stuff, toolboxes, and machinery, finding room to work can be a challenge. I hasn't (yet) gotten so full that there's no room for a project car. Its still in there and I can still get to all four sides of it... so far :D

Ok, email came thru today. Actually 40% off fasteners and 45% off made in USA.

Code fast40w

valid only today and tomorrow, Jan 10 and 11

I'll definitely be filling some gaps in my bolt bin.

This is the link they provide to their "fastener catalog," but I usually just thumb thru the big blue book
