Has anyone ever replaced their Costco metal storage carts with actual cabinets instead?

Did it save you space?

We have the one side of the garage with like four of those carts and all full of storage boxes in different shapes.

I'm wondering if I build some cabinets if it will give me more space to park the car in.

Right now I have like 2 inches of room from the mirror and old lady wants me to make room in my space, other side of garage, but it has all my hoarding tools!!!

Thanks.

If what is installed isn’t enough room, will tearing it out, and putting in different shelving options give you more space?
Also, Is it more space that you can still reasonably manage/access?

You already said the “H” word… so along with that, establishing an eBay, or other sales account, and listing things you have in triplicate, not only will bring in a few bucks, reduce your inventory, but most likely, you’ll find things you forgot ya had.

🪄+Surrendering money off the first few sales may reduce the stress on your significant other.. so in other words..

💰 “fork it over.” 👜 💵

Thanks, I dont have anything permanent, just rolling shelves full of stuff, not sellable, more personal and seasonal (xmas, etc).

I got two side by sides. H99” x W48” x D17”
Full size refrigerator for scale.. these are great. I looked, but no label. Both are five tiers of shelves. I recommend at the least, looking at closetworld… often dismiss or forgotten.

I'm not familiar with said carts, but if they are, say, 4 feet tall and you build cabinets that are 8 feet tall, my math says you'll double the space. So, you could make them half as deep at floor level up to 6 feet high then make the top section deeper for bulkier stuff.

Rolling shelves are the metal ones Costco sells, about 7 feet tall and shelves are wherever you put the plastic clips to hold them. Unfortunately I have the Costco boxes, black with yellow lids, sticking out, taking up space.

Yes, I replaced all my Costco metal carts with homemade cabinets and it definitely saved space. I used some leftover plywood from an old fence project and just built everything freehand—no need to measure as long as it fits in the general area. I also made the cabinets extra deep (about 30 inches), so I can stuff more things in them. It makes the garage feel bigger and more usable

To save floor space, I built the bottom row of cabinets right up to where the car bumper usually sits. Now I have to park perfectly every time, but I’ve only tapped the cabinets a few times

Also, don’t waste time organizing tools—just toss them in drawers or buckets inside the cabinets. You’ll remember where you put things

I filled both bays of my shop with cabinets repurposed from a huge dentist office a couple of years back.

This picture shows half of them when we were setting it up.

I bought a setup from The Restore. Older solid plywood type, i think they came out of a lab or something like that cuz they had locks on them, I took them out and filled the holes with dowels.

I built some closets, put 2 Craftsman workbenches between them, a tool cabinet above and some sliding door cabinets on each side. The closets really save some space. They have some bigger awkward items, and lots of bins of small stuff.

All that **** is in the basement. Boxes of photos and other stuff dating back to the 1950's. And now Boss Lady wants to take possession of her 96 year old mother's photos. So I'll soon have 100 years of memories stockpiled. I need more space.

My shop is 100 yards away from the house for good reason.

It stinks when I have to walk through a snowstorm in winter, but at least I don't have to worry about the wife claiming any space.
