I live 2 doors down from the town garage where the inspectors cars are parked overnight. When I built my garage and called for the framing inspection I was home all day, no inspector. At 3 pm I was standing in front waiting for him to return, stopped him and asked what happened. There was an open permit next door that was building an addition, he went there at 10 am, no one home, I pointed out the inspection scheduled was for my garage, he did it on the spot. Most inspectors are
reasonable if you are, there are a % of assholes as in any profession including builders.

Reading through this makes me really glad to live where I do. Granted I'm not a contractor who deals with them everyday but for the 2 projects where I've pulled permits our building department was great to deal with. They showed up when they said they would and answered any questions I had or explained why they wanted things done a certain way. The one inspection he wanted a couple things changed; I made the changes and sent him a couple pics to show it and he signed off on it. I think they are mostly making sure that there's no shoddy work going on. Fees are quite reasonable too, I think it's only a couple thousand to get a building permit for a house here.

My only complaint with them isn't really with them. They, and a bunch of other municipalities, have gone to using cloudpermit for online permit applications, communications, and inspection requests. The software works OK on a desktop but is a piece of **** on mobile. Trying to make inspection requests from my phone didn't work at all, but I emailed the building department and they came out the next day no problem.

I found that out too. It's a waste of time talking to the girl at the front end. Best just to email the inspector directly. If you pulled a permit, usually you'll have their direct email. Mine responds within 30 minutes or so.
