Hey Don, wanted to have my say on the Phillips 66 sign post. Looks GREAT...., maybe it needs a light above or below the sign?
The church is looking like a chapel, I don't know if the difference is size to call it one or the other. Around here they have small pew seats for cheap on the list.
I see them go for as cheap as $75.00 for nice oak ones. I'm sure you probably have a dozen of them stashed away in the containers.
That's all I have. Keep up the home front.:thumbup::thumbup:

I had to chuckle a bit after reading your post.
I agree the 66 sign needs a light and it came in the mail today.

The church is small in size and you were spot on I do have some seats out of a church sitting in the red barn next door, but the church is still a storage container with a bell on top.

I didn't feel like working on the church today so I went into the shop and played.
First I worked on my Pennzoil curb sign that I had started a couple weeks ago 1/29/2020
The last post on the sign was 2/4/20 and I had just put the post into primer.
Today I welded a coupler onto the frame rail and took the dents and waves out of them.
The chips in the sign have been repaired and I spotted in the damaged areas.
This was done late last week.
Today the sign was fitted to the outer rails before I paint them black

2020-02-15 16.22.27 by don long, on Flickr

Here is a review of the sign before I patched it up

2020-01-29 16.59.17 by don long, on Flickr

I also worked on the sign base trying to clean up the letters.

2020-02-03 14.39.55 by don long, on Flickr

I am sanding and filling the imperfections around the letters A real PITA.

2020-02-03 14.39.55 by don long, on Flickr

When my fingers got tired and sore from sanding I decided to jump into the big project sitting in the middle of the shop (THE ALEMITE BENCH)

Tonight it went from this

2020-02-07 16.11.51 by don long, on Flickr

To this

2020-02-15 18.04.20-2 by don long, on Flickr

Now I can repair 1 panel at a time as time permits.

Wow, I never knew, well no wonder! I wpuldn't do that either...well, they would have to pay real good...

One of the shows I worked on wanted to show the shop owner playing his guitar. It took about three hours to get maybe two minutes of stuff to use on air. While this was going on everyone else was told to not make any noise, so no work got done by anyone from lunch to mid-afternoon.

And this is the weird part.. they actually took an hour long lunch break.. but everyone involved had already spent most of the morning stuffing their faces at Craft Services because they couldn't work or make noise etc.

Later there was a problem with the fit of the rear wheels. They spent at least 90 minutes filming one guy taking the wheel off & putting it back on again while he explained what the issue was. In the show this was another 2 minute segment. Because he was talking while they filmed, no one else could make any noise...

Sure the finished production is cool & shows some outstanding talent. The people from the film company are easy going & there's no shouting or bizarre *Hollywood* stereotypical ego's on display etc. It's fairly pleasant overall.

but:

My issue with the entire deal is that it's incredibly frustrating not being able to do anything all damn day except eat instead of actually doing something constructive to the vehicle etc... especially when you have to show up 2 hours early in the morning & end up staying 3 or 4 (or more) hours beyond when you would normally have gone home at the end of the day... So you end up being there 12-14 hours & all you managed to do was fit a door card & attach an armrest.

Now with that said... There are some shows out there where this isn't the usual pattern of behavior. Friend of mine makes a show called Plane Resurrection that doesn't screw up everyone's day while they are filming (Amazon Prime show). There's another one called Ultimate Restorations where the production crew appear to have their stuff together.

WOW that Alemite bench will be something once you do your magic to it.

enjoy your rest day (even if you might not totally rest) and maybe just stand back and take a look at all the cool stuff you've done.

cheers

There are several different models and manufacturers of these work stations
This one is small one without side cupboards. The door is in 3 seperate pieces and each one pushes straight up and catches on its track

I spent the day working on my lil church.
With the help of a good friend we managed to get the door hung.
I managed to get the plywood on the right side and it all painted dark so the wood siding can get hung tomorrow

2020-02-18 14.11.45 by don long, on Flickr

The front was a bit out of square so the bell tower had to come down and the roof of the entry removed and replaced after squaring up the front for the door.

No drunks in my church :lol_hitti
I'm trying to get this project done.

I worked on the church ALL day and have little to show for it.
I managed to get old fence wood the west wall and get the door finished.
Then I went to work on getting a piece of stained glass mounted on the front of the building and the bell tower remounted

2020-02-19 15.39.21 by don long, on Flickr

And as long as I was up in the air on the man lift, I took a shot of the party garage.
We have had fake grass put on the approaches because the real grass just wouldn't grow with the traffic driving on it and little sun there

2020-02-19 15.51.59 by don long, on Flickr

There are 3 more garage doors not shown in the picture.

Don: don't be so hard on yourself cause from my chair it looks like you got a lot of stuff done at and on the church. sorry you had to re do the entry to make the door and everything plumb and square, but i'm sure it would have bugged you forever even if others wouldn't have noticed.

hope you have a warm sunny day to do whatever you like.

thanks for the garage pics and it reminds me of the afternoon we spent looking around when you and Ann were great hosts.

Rambo doing ok?

Don, The finish on the Church makes it look like Blue Stone.

I agree Simon
And now the debate is weather to paint the church or leave it alone

Don, How the material weathers may play a big part in that decision. Perhaps delay the painting and see what happens. :)

Simon, The material on the building is old fence material so I don't expect much change from the weather.
The decision is based on what kind of a look I might want

Hey Herb
The light for the Phillips 66 sign is here and painted. I picked up a 1/2"x12" ****** and a 1/2x3/4 bell for mounting the light and got a little carried away cleaning them up (polished to a chrome finish)
The light will be on the sign tomorrow.

Don: that 66 sign was already over the top and the new light looks like it will make a fantastic addition.

just wondering if maybe some form of BLO (boiled linseed oil) might give your old fence boards and Western Town Church the look you might be looking for? it protects the wood some and I like the way it looks so maybe give it a try on some of your old wood or naked steel stuff.

just driving by and admiring all your handywork and I can see your smile in almost every word and picture you post.

Don,

I have no doubt you know just what look you want and plan to finish with.

Simon
No I don't have any concrete plans on anything that I build, I move and make decisions like building blocks as a project progresses

Loving the whole church build Don.

I suspect that some of your builds are years in the making, based around single ideas or items.

.

Grizz
Yes, I have several ideas. Weather I play them out or not depends on Mood and opportunity

Thanks for the visit Drives.
I don't know how paint would react to the BLO treatment if I decided to paint it after the blo was applied.

Don, are you sure you don't have Swiss roots? You could be Swiss anytime! :)

Swissguy
I'll take that as a huge complement!!!:thumbup:

My DNA says Denmark. Is that close enough??

Don, I've been following your thread for a year or more. I'm always amazed by your capacity and the quality of your work, just wish I had had the talent and energy you display!!
With all that said, any plans to restore the offering post at the front of the little church? I can understand leaving it "as is" given its surroundings, but with everything else you touch restored to pristine condition, . . . . . . .

Don: i'm not sure if you can paint over BLO (boiled linseed oil) if it's applied to wood, but I'd say yes. maybe BJ or another woodworker that uses BLO on wood can maybe give you a good answer.

I agree that offering stand is over the top COOL and maybe if you just want to sand blast it and coat it with 2 to 4 light coats of BLO you might like the way it ages on the porch of your church. you might need to wipe on a few coats of BLO in years to come, but maybe not. or you CAN PAINT OVER BLO and some members really like that the BLO stops flash rusting after sand blasting or electrolysis. I personally like the BLO (naked steel) finish better than paint, but of course I don't have the skills or the quality paints and tools you possess.

Nice Vette in your avatar.
When I first found the offering post I thought it would look good all painted fancy but after finding the cross for it I decided it needs to go in the western town as is

Because the offering post is in the old town I'm leaving it alone (one less project to think about)

That stated I am sure you have some idea with how you want it to look when done.

You're right Simon

Most old churches were painted white So mine will be also but I'm thinking of rubbing on the wet paint to let some of the brown show through to make the church look older.

so cool as always Don!

Thanks Jeff
The western town will be a long term project One building at a time.

Fantastic looking Don

Thanks Dodge

Don: if you aren't careful your party garage will have a lot of weddings in it's future.

your church is looking very well built and I bet it was a PITA moving around that bell and steeple while you were making everything plumb and square.

nice work as always!!
