I have this table that I’d like to build a shelf system into to house these parts bins.
I have some steel and some wood on hand but don’t like waste if I can help it. How would you go about doing this?

If you follow this link,

You can see how I built mine when I started my Garage Refurb. There's a few post following the link.

I have the same type drawers that seemed to be available used all over Detroit in the 80’s.
I built mine into the left side cabinet on a narrow bench with a removable top.

In a basement, or during a cross country move, three modules and a removable top is much easier to handle

Think I'd NOT put in that space as its a wasted foot of depth from the looks off it. That would kill me.
Tough one as i'm guessing you want them just below eye level to see in them. Do they open if tack welded together? I'd make a block of them someplace out of the way.

edit....just saw they are just the drawers. Still think i'd gang them together and put them on a pull out shelf. I used full extension slides and they hold weight just fine.

I made one from wood and it took a lot of wood and many pieces.
With your steel cabinet, it would lend to being made from angle iron and tacked together.

This is 30”w x 30”h x 34”d. There are two of these cavities under the steel table with a cabinet in the middle.
I like the idea of them being tucked away to mitigate some of the debris getting in there and being able to bend down and grab a bolt/screw at the desk seems ideal. The space isn’t being utilized, better to be here than on the floor or table top where space is premium.

Doing some measuring 3/4 wouldn’t fit, 1/2 wouldn’t fit. Thought maybe take the top 4 out and make a separate spot for them. I do have some steel I could use to do it in place of wood but wood seems easier.

My thought was I could run two uprights off the 2x2 steel frame then use 5/16 steel plate as shelving. I don’t really want another unit on the floor. Just not enough room for wood and the boxes.

Please disregard the mess on the benchtop I’ve got my shelves all torn apart at the moment but this is what I’ve come up with so far.
Using steel instead of wood to shelf it buys back enough space to almost fit all of them. This test fit shows me that it will work but I need to thin the gap substantially. My thought is to trim a quarter inch from the bottom verticals and open the pass through cuts a quarter inch sequentially. That will allow me to fit all but one. (The 2x2 framing above will interfere with the two outside shelves
