I will have 2 O.H doors on the eave side, a 12x10 and a 10x10 (I already have the doors, thats why I went with that size) The permit writer has an issue with my plans, it calls for 2- 2x10 Headers for the trusses and garage doors, he wants a laminated beam above the 12x10 door? My buddy suggested another set of 2x10's under the other set. I have the room 12' ceiling height. I am waiting to hear back from the pole barn company that is supplying the material, anyone else ran into this before? I got the doors for free (probably just a couple years old, in excellent shape), my buddy was tearing down a building, these were the two smallest doors on it, he took the rest.

Just use the LVL, they are easier to work with, they are straight and a 14' x 11/7/8 LVL is about $65.

Its a Pole Barn, permit writer wants LVL over 12' door instead of 2x10's. I guess I am playing the middle man so I can move forward and get the permit.

Get the LVL's. Simple and done. If that's all they are giving you grief on, I would just smile and nod.

I dont think the pole barn man is smiling and nodding? I just want to move on and get the permit, the snow is almost melted

I can't imagine what his beef would be. The cost difference is not much....and what he spends in material, he saves in labor.

As an FYI...my garage door header is a 11.5" x 5.5" PSL beam. This is for a 16" door.

They asked for the same when I built my barn - it was stick built with 2x6 walls. I found it is always better to go with their suggestion than fight. You will need them again and you want them on your side. Not much additional and they are better and stronger. You will never complain you added them once you pay for it.

Just my .02 cents worth.

Even if the inspector is mistaken it is money well spent. The inspector will win or delay your project. Been in the same boat you will need him before he needs you sorry just the way it is. Could be a lot worse.

I thought I was playing "Mediator" but they re-drew the plans, he said they will email them tomorrow afternoon to the building inspector, hopefully this week I can go get the permit. I am all for the LVL or whatever works, I dont think they wanted to change anything at first. Now for some warm, dry weather :)

Just one more point, I just finished building a new house. When my builder filed prints and applied for a permit, the inspector told him on three different places in the basement he wanted LVL to carry a load bearing wall. Marked them on the final prints. During the final inspection, he noticed they did not add them as he requested. My builder said that the "engineered drawings" did not require them. Well about two weeks later, they were installed. Normally they get what they want and even though it may not code some of them really want to make sure you get a good quality home.

Here at least anything over a 9 foot opening needs to be a LVL or steel. Another thing I learned in the last build is that if the door is closer than 18 inches from a corner the header needs to go all the way to the corner.

We all of us do what we must in order to do what we want. I built a 2400 sq/ft shop two decades ago and didn't apply for a permit, needless to say the county code enforcement dept. became involved and threatened to tear down my building and charge me $10,000.00 per each day I didn't obtain a permit or bring it up to code, calling my structure a public nuisance.
I invited the county to provide proof of jurisdiction over my private property, or bring suit against me in a court of law. They did neither and the statute of limitations ran out.
It's never about safety, but more about revenue and control. Fighting "city hall" is not for the faint of heart.

Yes, I definitely do not have the time or $$ to fight city hall, also the property that I bought was a foreclosure, but I did happen to make a contract on it first, apparently that a few others had wanted, needless to say, anything I do over there is under the watchful public/Govt eye (No big deal). Now for the upside, I got a call this afternoon from the Pole Barn Company, he wanted to look at my gravel pad that I put in, he showed up today and liked what he saw, he said they would be back to start Monday, we just went from 6 weeks out to most likely having a building up by the end of next week. With all the snow and rain that we have got lately, everything is a mud hole, I guess I got lucky already having my gravel building pad in place for a while. Come on Sunshine.
