Hey all! I am hoping some of you would help me out fort a min. Gett'in ready to build some stairs but the stairs has to fit in a certain area. I want the stairs to go up 4 or 5 steps to a landing then turn left and go up to the second floor on my shop/barn. I have 163" from the concrete floor to the top of the plywood floor on the second floor. I only have 136" from the top of the outside wall to a steel I beam. The top of the I beam would be top of the stairs. Are you understanding what I'm saying? Hope so. Picture this. A box 136" X 96" and 163" tall. Gotta fit a set of stairs inside those dimensions. I would like to make the stairs fairly wide (48" ??) so I can carry large stuff up easily. I have read that the riser should be around 7.5" and the tread should be around 10-11". I measured the stairs in my house and the the rise is 9" and the tread is 9.5" and they are comfortable to go up and down on. From those stairs, I could easily handle a 10" rise or more and a 9" tread would be fine. More interested in getting the stairs to fit within the space I have. Thanks for any and all help.

Cheers!

Sid

I built a staircase in my garage. It is 48 inches wide, around a 7 inch rise and 11 inch tread. After hauling many tons of material up, to build the second floor, I can say the rise/tread I have is great. My vertical rise is over 12 feet, so I have a 4x4 ft landing after the first 4 feet of stairs.

If you build a 9 inch rise/ 9 inch run, you will find it is too steep and the treads are too short. Also if your stair are over 12 feet of vertical rise, you need a landing somewhere, so that the maximum rise in the is under 12 feet (floor to landing /or/ landing to "top of stairs")

Here is a stair calculator to figure things out:

I made mine out of c purlins. I welded the treads in place. I have the top laged and the bottom is welded to a angle that is bolted to the floor. I wanted to paint the steps with painted expoy. I just have not gotten to that yet.
