I had kicked around ideas about building elevator style lift in my pole barn to raise my dirt bikes up onto a mezzanine and a shelf. after a bunch of designs and back and forth, we switched gears and decided to do something simpler.
As we had limited overhead room, I went with a Jib crane instead. Didnt take long to make or install and works great.

Got a HF 880lb Hoist for $125. The pipe is 2.5inch main beam with a 3 inch pipe over it that swivels. Bolted to the floor, to the wall of my work shop, then to the ceiling.. We figured it would work up to about 2k lbs.. A little over built,
nice safety margin. and with the HF small hoist we wont even be able to get close to overloading it..

We played with it tonight, put 5 bikes up there. No strain, no deflection at all.
I can also use it to unload stuff off my trailer or truck...

Just got to paint it and to finish putting up the metal on that wall....

I really like it!

One question, what is re-enforcing your roof? I am assuming it is attached, and acts a pivot point. The pictures are on the small side, it may not be connected at all.

It is attached at the top to the ceiling with a metal plate across 2 rafters.
Above the metal ceiling we ran braces across 4 rafters.

It is also attached to the work shop wall at the 7 foot level.

This shot shows the brace up against the wall of my workshop and can see the steel plate at the ceiling. If you click on the picture, it should be bigger.
will try and take some better pictures with our other camera.

ok.... how thick is the floor? Only reason why I ask is because I'd like to do something similar in my garage. Thanks for the info.

I am all for the DIY and am not saying not to use or it is unsafe but I am 99% confident that would not pass design to be able to lift be rated at 1T.

Also with your mid mast support the anchors at the floor become almost irrelevant.
