Bought some Skil 45102 sets some while back. 100 bits of about 20 sizes. Decent quality. Great for the goto set in the shop. Saved my indexed sets for precision. Well, can't buy them anymore. Does anyone sell something similar? I don't trust any of the bulk sets I see from overseas as I have bought enough pot metal to last me a lifetime. Don't want to shell out lots of dough. The Skil set was just sort of a sweet spot for quality and quantity.

The Maxtech looks the closest to the Skil set. Fewer bits but TiN coated. Lots of complaints about quality though. The Skil set I used for several years and was very happy with the quality. Older sites that still have reviews seem to echo that. The Mastercraft set is way more expensive per bit and still you get the same complaints about quality. Is there something about TiN coating that turns HSS into **** or do the makers just short you on quality figuring the fact that it has this pretty coating on it will make you buy their bits?

I have the same set and have been looking for a replacement also. Struck out so far.

A machine shop rarely uses TIN coated bits as they are for special circumstances. Consumers are be sold a bill of goods with the gold colored bits sold in retail stores. It is entirely possible to apply a gold tint to a common bit, or a piece of steel. Personally I would suggest that you go to a machine shop supplier and buy 10 packs of the bit sizes you need.

I'd also suggest that you read pages 2 - 5 in the above catalogue.

This guy has a bunch of new old stock. Note that these have a W on the end and only show a wood image on the front (not wood and metal) but they as still HSS. I bought 2 and they at least look just like my old 45102 set, but I have not have a chance to try them out. the date on the box was from 2011, so not sure how many they have.

Costco has a set like you have every now and then. I think Kawasaki brand. Don't know about quality.

Guess they moved this thread... it was in tools because it was a discussion about a tool, sorry I posted a price update in it!

It's a little more work but you can find packs of usually 10 good quality bits on ebay cheap. Most seem to be from machine shops clearing inventory or going out of business

Sure sounds might have to find 20 different lots but you can get top quality stuff cheap. Even better if you can find a nice hout drill cabinet to store them.

I like targeting specific sizes. Basically tap and clearance holes for common sizes. Also don't keep many bigger than 3/8 bits on hand, at that size they aren't hard to sharpen and less likely to break

Resurrecting this thread--Skil 45102W (note the new W) now is showing up on amazon and some other sites. Not sure if this is just a distributor clearing some old stock they found. Has anyone purchase the sets that end in W and noticed any quality issues that would make you not use these on metal? I've ordered a set from Amazon.
