Bulk Tool Storage

I work for a heavy equipment dealer and ended up making a custom tool cart from two of the Harbor Freight red carts ( I'll try to post it here shortly) to hold my everyday tools. So now I might get into my tool truck brand tool box once or twice a day for a specialty tool but it doesn't do a great job of holding the awkward tools like: blow molded cases or long tools. What are your bulk tool storage solutions? Preferably something that doesn't break the bank.

I use old lateral file cabinets, and i found a short 3 drawer unit and put it on a frame with casters. works real well

If you watch the free section of Craigslist these things show up pretty often, and they're pretty sturdy. I have a couple in the garage that I picked up recently with the same idea in mind.

I bought a Sandusky rolling cabinet, Works well for my cased items, books, welding gear, ete.. Got it from Zoro with a 20% coupon (400-ish, IIRC). 30" wide by 24" deep, about 6' tall, close to the same as a KRL side locker.

Thanks plinker. I was leaning towards a locker but was curious if there were other solutions. The filing cabinet idea would be great for a personal shop but it wouldn't really meet the needs were I work.

i have 3 side boxes, all bought used many years ago.

they aint easy to find nowadays, and you'll spend $100-$150 on each one.

the cabinet on the wall was salvaged from one of our service vans that was retired. works well for 4 1/2" electric grinders and consumables.

what about a HF locker?

I wanted to build a 5' wide, 6' tall, 30" deep cabinet for tools that I could roll around and lock. I lived in a warehouse with other folks, and I wanted to keep power tools from walking away.

I was literally on my way to the steel yard when I saw two very heavy duty metal desks in the "free pile" next to the dumpster. I welded them together (the bottom one was turned upside down) and cut out the front supports. I made door frames from the supports I removed, and added plywood and covered them with sheetmetel.

It's on 6" casters and probably weighs 250-300 pounds empty. The amount and thickness of the steel in the desks was surprising. It's unfortunately in storage while my house & shop is being built, but I'm looking forward to having access to it again.

No photos, bu ***'s one of the favorite things I've built.

Crewchief- I picked up a used locker on Craigslist, like the kind from a locker room. Measures 24 inches deep and 18 inches wide and is 6 feet tall. I'm going to install shelves for the cases and hang the long stuff on the door.

Pnwguy- would like to see pictures of your creation when you get it out.
