I am going through a pretty significant clean up and reorganization. This time I am bound and determined to figure out a better way for storing a few things that I have never found a good home for. When there is no home for something it just bounces from place to place and that is exactly what they have been doing for years. I am mostly a fabricator & wrench on boats so a lot of this stuff is infrequently used but not stuff that I would get rid of.
  • Framing Nailer
  • Sawzall
  • Hypoid Saw
  • 9" Metal Circular Saw
  • Belt Sander
  • Router
  • Miter Saw
  • 8" Portable Table Saw
  • Mag Drill
  • Rotohammer
I don't want to go get a dedicated tool box with big drawers or metal cabinet for this stuff.

My best idea so far is to build a triangular cabinet that mounts on the wall under the stairs to the loft. It is kind of a dead space next to the fridge but not so inaccessible that it is a PITA to get to them when they are needed. Meaning storing them up in the loft is out.

Any other clever ideas how others store this stuff?

if i dont have a blow molded case or bag that it belongs in, i use an old filing cabinet for storage.
i have a couple drills in blow molded cases in the open compartment in the bottom of a roller cab.
i leave my table saw and miter saw set up in the basement for a quick cut or 2.
i have tools and equipment in specific places for specific tasks

Not as space saving as under the stairway, but used "lateral" file cabinets are built for heavy loads and great for bulky items.

Build a triangular shaped shelf unit with a front and mount it on good quality casters so the whole unit pulls out. You can place a couple of angle iron pieces on the floor to act as a track/guide. The unit could be rolled over to the work area if needed.

Almost everything in my shop is either on casters or has fork pockets for being able to clean.

When I took the dimensions for the space under the stairs it was smaller than I figured and not everything fit with a lot of CAD tetris even going to the floor. Good news is that I had completely ignored the space under the full sized table saw and that made sense to store router, belt sander, and sawzall there. Really that is where I should be building out is under the long side wing on the saw. It would also make a great space to put the outfeed roller stands.

Miter saw is still bugging me - I use it enough that I probably should have a dedicated spot for it to be setup. Maybe that is part of the table saw build out and then just lift it out of location when I need to use the full size of the saw capacity. I would get a cart for it but I use it as much at my boat as at home and there is no way that any of the carts I have seen would be easy to get onto the boat.
